At the Core of Sound is Music

“Sound today is to music what colour has been to painting since the beginning of time…”

The major contribution of our art is to have comprehensively revisited the word music, showing that it is not limited to traditional instruments and voice… To have dared to rethink the ancestral notions of music and instrument, and the status of composer.

This renewal of the art of sounds (for music is first and foremost sound) holds in itself – just like traditional or contemporary instrumental works – the ability to appeal to human sensibility and, even, to reach out to a much wider audience than what it currently does. This is made possible by the expressive powers and possibilities of a technology that opens up a vast field of new meanings, and by the innovative imagination of the composers of today.

Of course, we still have to deal with the weight of the conventions of our times…

Figures de son is a way to approach the history of an artist who has written important pages of the genre, but also to discover gems until recently unpublished.

Critique

Roland Torres, SilenceAndSound, February 23, 2021

Review

Antonis N Frangos, To Periodiko, February 21, 2021

Thus, Figures de son creates a kind of spatial polyphony by mixing prepared recordings through constant improvisation, with unpredictable evolution.

Patrick Ascione (1953-2014) is getting his new posthumous release.

A true master of electroacoustic musique concrète is unfolding truly refreshing and unusually adventureous narrative on display.

His idea of spatial polyphony as he used to call it gives you an insight into what it was to mould and blend so many counterpoints into a densely punctured storyline of his works — an interesting set of pieces with its own rhythm and reason.

A narrative is something that is overused, abused and de-constructed in a masterful way — be it processed concrete sounds or voiceover — it will always be a point of positive friction with how you can cope it as a listener and how it leaves an impression on you.

Ascione experimented with beatmaking and plunderphony in his own way. It’s a good way to remember him trying to dwelve on this goldmine of ideas and aspects and details and vibes…

Kritik

One of the few works from this genre that you can actually listen through without overwhelming your senses.
