After having lived his chilhood in Madagascar (until 14-year old) and a self-taught musical training in Bordeaux and Paris in the fifties, François Bayle joins in 1958-60 the Groupe de recherches musicales (GRM) and Pierre Schaeffer, Olivier Messiaen, Karlheinz Stockhausen…
In 1966 he is in charge of the GRM at the Service de la recherche. In 1975, after the integration of the GRM into the Institut national de l’audiovisuel (Ina), he becomes director fo the Ina-GRM department until 1997. He is notably responsible for the design of the Acousmonium (1974) and its concerts series. He created the disc label and supported the development of advanced-technology musical instruments (SYTER; Grm Tools; Midi Formers; Acousmographe). In 1992 he founded the Acousmathèque, a directory of more than 2000 works dating back to 1948.
Leaving the GRM in 1997, François Bayle sets up his own multiphonic studio, the Studio Magison. The Magison label has released 20 CD of his works.
