Philip Mead studied piano at the Royal Academy of Music in London (United Kingdom), and is a prizewinner in the 1978 Gaudeamus International Competition for Interpreters of Contemporary Music (Amsterdam, The Netherlands). Since then he has concentrated on contemporary music, performing virtually the entire piano music of Messiaen, and giving premieres of works by Crumb, Stockhausen, and many younger composers. In 1988 he founded and organized the British Contemporary Piano Competition. In recent years he has become particularly associated with music for piano and electronics, and has an ever-increasing repertory of works commissioned from leading composers. His frequent tours have taken him to the USA, Canada, France, Germany, Eastern Europe and Scandinavia. He broadcasts regularly on the BBC and other European stations and many of his performances have been recorded on disc. He performed at the ICMC’94 (International Computer Music Conference) in Århus (Danmark).
