The circle and the square have been symbols of the creation of beings and things in all civilizations since antiquity. They symbolize the same plane of creation, contraction and dilation, the solid and the aerial, the earth and the sky. They are complementary like the horizontal and vertical planes, World and Man. They represent both the genesis and limits — the sum—of the entire cosmos. They form the mesh that contains and fixes scattered elements, that maintains cohesion and order in structures.

Cercles et surfaces is an answer to this principle of equilibrium in movements between rupture and connection, movement and statism, flux and rhythm, crossings in space, filigree polyphonies. In this aesthetic, seemingly chaotic and dissimilar sound patterns approach one another and combine in arborescent forms to produce a new order.

[English translation: François Couture, iii-19]

Cercles et surfaces [Circles and Surfaces] was realized in 2012 at the GRM studio in Paris (France) and premiered on January 26, 2013, as part of Ina-GRM’s Multiphonies concert series at MPAA’s Auditorium Saint-Germain (Paris, France). I put together a collection of texts related to the epicurean concepts set in poetry by Lucretius in De rerum natura. I did this as an attempt to trace back the origins of the concept of “element.” So, what you will find here is the nature of things presented as an insomniac mix of parallel quotes: from the birth of physics (Michel Serres) to Foucault’s pendulum (Umberto Eco), and number and time (Marie-Louise von Franz), all seasoned with tango, to find the logic of the element (Francis Wolff).

[English translation: François Couture, iii-19]

L was realized in 2003 in the studios of La Muse en circuit (Alfortville, France) and premiered on January 19, 2004, at Péniche Adélaïde (Paris, France). It was commissioned by La muse en circuit. I would like to thank Élise Caron (recorded voice). L won La muse en circuit’s 5th Concours d’art radiophonique (France, 2003).

Life is a becoming of small moments. As in a game of hopscotch, we progress in life by hopping on one foot across stations in various states of mind. It is a path of back-and-forth, of light and darkness. Joy, uncertainty, dreams, fear, absurdity, anguish, cheerfulness alternate in our becoming to build the spider’s web that makes us be. Marelle ou Les instants de la vie [Hopscotch, or The Moments of Life] is an autobiographical electroacoustic suite.

[English translation: François Couture, iii-19]

Marelle ou Les instants de la vie was realized in 2017 at the Métamorphoses d’Orphée studio of Musiques & Recherches in Ohain (Belgium) and premiered on March 29, 2017, during the concert ÉlectroBelge at Espace Senghor in Brussels (Belgium). It was commissioned by Musiques & Recherches.

Purzelbäume [Somersaults] is an electroacoustic “klango.” The term “klango” was proposed by the commissioning organization to suggest a sound element (klang) with a tango rhythm. The idea was to create an electroacoustic piece one could dance to. The Spanish translation dando tumbos refers to a traditional Argentine tango text.

[English translation: François Couture, iii-19]

Purzelbäume was realized in 2002-03 at the composer’s studio in Paris (France) and premiered on March 23, 2003, under the title Dando Tumbos at the Sonic Arts Lounge (Berlin, Germany) as part of MaerzMusik. It was commissioned by DeutschlandRadio Berlin (Germany).

Tapage nocturne [Nightly Disturbance] is part of a trilogy entitled Trois moments du jour [Three Moments of the Day] for recorders and stereo fixed medium. It is an acousmatic interlude that uses the different registers of the recorder, which offer contrasting characteristics in terms of colour, agility and “impasto,” in order to produce highly expressive textures and conglomerates.

[English translation: François Couture, iii-19]

Tapage nocturne was realized in 2015 at the composer’s studio in Mar del Plata (Argentina) and premiered on September 4, 2015, at Sala negra40 in Buenos Aires (Argentina). It was also presented on September 11, 2015, at the Centre cultural Victoria Ocampo in Mar del Plata (Argentina) and the following day, September 12, 2015, as part of the III Jornadas Gilles Deleuze at Teatro Diagonal in Mar del Plata (Argentina).

Yegl is a lost file, a diabolical virtual element that, through the quirks of computing, escapes our control. The little devil reappears capriciously with its codes and peculiarities. In such a back-and-forth of sonorous raillery evolves everyday life, filled with echoes and sensations. In our indoor living spaces, we listen with resignation to our routine tools (printer, keyboards, cell phones, vacuum cleaners…). In the outdoor environment, we suffer the tools of others (hammers, beeps and all kinds of other signals).

[English translation: François Couture, iii-19]

Yegl was realized in 2006-07 at EMS (Stockholm, Sweden) and at the composer’s studio in Mar del Plata (Argentina), and premiered on September 5, 2007, as part of Internationale Gaudeamus Muziekweek 2007 at the Bimhuis in Amsterdam (Netherlands). It was commissioned by Stichting Ton Bruynèl (following the awarding of the Ton Bruynèl Award in 2005).
