The title Éclats de feux (“Shards of Fire”) is a reference to the countless bonfires and fireworks one can see and hear every November in England. This is the first piece the composer completed in the UK, and it echoes travels and fast-paced movements through a rich, contrasted approach where several tableaux and soundspaces are stacked. Éclats de feux is an attempt to express wonder in the face of the complexity of constant changes.

[English translation: François Couture, ii-22]

Éclats de feux was realized in 2015-16 at the University of Sheffield Sound Studios (USSS) (UK) and was premiered on May 14, 2016 as part of the concert series Sound Junction in Sheffield (UK). Éclats de feux won the 2nd prize at the Jeu de temps / Times Play (JTTP) (Canada, 2016).

Omega 3 resulted from a creative residency with accordionist Tuulikki Bartosik around an abandoned factory in the woods in Estonia. It brings together a large number of sounds made by industrial objects, sounds from the surroundings, accordion sounds, and voice sounds. This piece uses elements of traditional Nordic folk music to present an exploration of the current cultural landscape with its heritage from the past.

[English translation: François Couture, ii-22]

Omega 3 was realized from May to July 2016 as part of a creative residency at MoKS Kunstikeskus in Mooste (Estonia) and was premiered on July 2, 2016 for the opening of the exhibition Omega 3 in Mooste (Estonia). It was commissioned by MoKS Kunstikeskus. Thanks to Evelyn Grzinich and John Grzinich.

An Almost Abstract Experience goes through a number of tableaux made with a selection of eclectic sounds recorded in October-November 2016 in Stockholm (Stockholms Saxofonkvartett) and Visby (composition students at the Gotlands Tonsättarskola).

This is one of Vanessa Massera’s rare works made using studio-recorded sounds almost exclusively. The resulting sonic environment is much less based on the identifiable spaces usually present in her music. Here, the writing is overrun by untethered imagination.

[English translation: François Couture, ii-22]

An Almost Abstract Experience was realized in the fall of 2016 at the Visby International Centre for Composers (VICC, Sweden) and was premiered on January 21, 2017 during the concert Musik komponerad i Studio Alpha på Tonsättarcentrum as part of the FRST festival at Gotlands Konstmuseum in Visby (Sweden). Thanks to Sten Melin at the VICC for the invitation.

Exercitium arithmeticæ occultum nescientis se numerare animi is the result of a collaboration with the Stockholms Saxofonkvartett. Met on a first creative residency at the Visby International Centre for Composers (VICC, Sweden) in the fall of 2016, the ensemble kindly offered to record them at a spontaneous improvisation session in Stockholm in October 2016. These recordings were then used to put together this piece, which can be presented either as an acousmatic work or a mixed music work (with saxophone quartet). The title refers to how complex music can be, thus becoming a quasi-mystical listening experience if you let yourself be taken by it.

[English translation: François Couture, iii-22]

Exercitium arithmeticæ occultum nescientis se numerare animi was realized in 2017-18 at the University of Sheffield Sound Studios (USSS) (UK) and at the EMS (Stockholm, Sweden) and was premiered on March 16, 2019 as part of the Svensk Musikvår Festival at the Grünewaldsalen of Konserthuset Stockholm (Sweden). Thanks to the Stockholms Saxofonkvartett for its valuable collaboration.

Border Crossing was part of a LARP (Live-Action Role-Play) produced in the UK with the migrant crisis in Europe as a theme. This LARP was raising awareness about the challenges migrants face and the conditions in which these challenges arise. This work is the symbolic representation of blindly passing from one’s country of origin to the next one without knowing what the path looks like or how long it will take to get to your destination.

[English translation: François Couture, ii-22]

Border Crossing was realized in 2017-18 at the EMS (Stockholm, Sweden) and was premiered on May 24, 2018 during the event The Quota at The Gaol in Oakham (Wales, UK). It was commissioned by the Avalon larp studio. Thanks to Martine Svanevik for this wonderful collaboration.

Résistance was made from recordings of the voice of my grandmother Nives Massera. She is relating experiences from her youth in France, notably her meeting with Django Reinhardt and her involvement with the Resistance. Accordion and synthesizer sounds have been added to compose a rich dramatic universe.

[English translation: François Couture, ii-22]
