Prologue

Prologue

Carl:

Carl:

It wasn’t the recounting of our adventure that bothered her. She knew she would finish it. But the fear that she would lose her memories — “Such marvelous pictures captured in my mind’s eye,” she said — to have them erased bit by bit, covered up by the words. It was the fear which prevented her from writing down anything at all concerning the reality we were living. Her description was nothing but a lie, a grotesque forgery. Now, she tells me she doubts her memories.

On touche le fond… on s’enfonce.

We’ve touched bottom… we’re mired.

Carl:

Carl:

It’s impossible to backtrack. We must try to go on.

Livia:

Livia:

Les commandes ne répondent plus.

The controls aren’t responding.

Carl:

Carl:

Mais qu’est-ce que c’est?

So what is it?

Scene B: Working of the story

Livia:

Livia:

Nothing’s happened for days, we’re paralyzed from waiting. Stuck to our seats by the trembling obscurity which weighs down on us.

Scene A: On mission

Livia:

Livia:

Tu reconnais quelque chose?

Can you make out anything?

Carl:

Carl:

No — nothing. It’s so thick, I didn’t think the fault was this deep.

Livia:

Livia:

Mais où sommes nous?

Where are we?

Last night… maybe… Oh, I don’t know anymore. I had a dream. It was awful. We were listening to drums at the foot of a mountain in the middle of the city. There was a big crowd of people. The sun was setting. I saw an angel and it took to flight, while all around lions tried to hold it back but… and then it became dark. The mountain ripped open and from the gaping wound fire began to emerge… Everything was on fire… We ran, ran through the rubble until we came upon a river… and there… There you saw, you too, all these children chained under the water, their faces covered with moss, their mouths wide open. We had to escape… so we stepped on their faces, do you hear, like they were stones. We walked on the faces of the drowned children… all night long.

Si on sortait d’ici, on verrait quelque chose.

If we’d get out of here, we’d be able to see something.

Carl:

Carl:

L’air y est peut-être irrespirable. On n’a plus aucune donnée. C’est trop risqué.

The air might not be breathable. We no longer have any information… It’s too risky.

Livia:

Livia:

If you think that I’m going to sit around and rot here, you’re mistaken.

Carl:

Carl:

Attends!

Wait!

Livia:

Livia:

I don’t believe it anymore. They’re all acting as if nothing has happened. It’s impossible.

Scène B: Travaillant au récit

Scene B: Working of the story

Livia:

Livia:

During his speech, the president described us as the saviour of humanity. What have we become?

Scène A: En mission

Scene A: On mission

Livia:

Livia:

I had to walk for a long time. What happened to Carl? This strange sensation of foreignness keeps confusing me. What if they’re right? What if nothing has happened? The sun is killing me and this squeezing inside my chest, it’s still so painful.

Carl:

Carl:

Livia!

Livia!

Livia:

Carl!

Carl!

Carl:

Carl:

Come see. The passage is getting wider. I can make out some objects. I have no idea where we are, but it’s somewhere else. We’ve made it.

Livia:

Livia:

Si on sortait d’ici, on verrait quelque chose.

If we’d get out of here, we’d be able to see something.

Scene C: Other time, other place

Livia:

Livia:

It’s time to open a parentheses.

Carl:

Carl:

Qui a dit ça?

Who says?

Livia:

Livia:

It’s absolutely necessary, but what do I do?

Carl:

Carl:

You have to leave the frame and get to the wall. There, in the green room there’s a window, and beyond the window the light falls on the pond and all around the pond the tall grass waves in the wind.

Livia:

Livia:

C’est le décor tout ça. Allons! Vers les enfants.

That’s just scenery. Come on! To the children.

Scene C: Other time, other place

Livia:

Livia:

“In a milieu where, because of the surroundings, the color green predominates, as in a patch of water amid blades of grass, an animalcule will make itself green seeing as the light can be an irritant. It makes itself green to reflect the light, and thusly, by adapting to its environment, protects itself from the harmful effects of light.” (Jacques Lacan, Le séminaire, livre XI: Les quatre concepts fondamentaux de la psychanalyse (The Seminar, Vol XI: The Four Basic Concepts of Psychoanalysis), Édition du Seuil, 1973, p 113)

Carl:

Carl:

Tu y comprends quelque chose?

Do you understand any of that?

Livia:

Livia:

It’s something to do with green and with light.

Président:

President:

The situation is critical. The international community has ratified the CIPE agreement. The mission will take place as scheduled, tomorrow at dawn. Everything’s ready. The stakes are high, there’s risk involved, but we no longer have any choice. We have to attempt the impossible, and we will succeed, of that I’m certain.

Musique!

And now, let’s get on with the festivities. May this mountain on which we stand echo with the sounds of rejoicing. Music!

Scène C: Autre temps, autre lieu

Scene C: Other time, other place

Livia:

Livia:

It’s always like that when the end is near.

Carl:

Carl:

I don’t think there should be a denouement, because nothing ever really ends.

Livia:

Livia:

Perhaps… so the last scene will be a celebration, like a mask.

Carl:

Carl:

You might say like a mask of death during carnivals. A masked apotheosis.

Scene A: On mission

Carl:

Carl:

I remember my mother. She was so beautiful in her dress the colors of a garden. Everyday she’d wait for me after school, holding a fruit in each hand. We’d walk down the hill and as the sun disappeared at the end of the street, she’d stop and look at me. “The sun,” she’d say, “always spreads a pink blanket over us, like a mother covers her children before going to sleep.” We won’t have any nightmares tonight, someone is watching over us.
