2 — Sequence I Christmas Time — Scene 1

Madame Schmidt
Tais-toi, et mets la table!
(Léone s’évanouit. Tous la regardent. Noir. Épilogue violent.)

(Rimling, small town in the Moselle district of northeastern France. Family dinner at the Schmidts, Christmas eve. Mrs Schmidt and her daughter are preparing the Turkey.
Mrs Schmidt is talking about a sordid incident she read about in the paper. The choir — mezzo, baritone, bass — is chanting as she speaks. Did this actually happen this way or is it Léone’s fantasized recollection?)
Mrs Schmidt
There’s been a terrible tragedy in Rimling. The butcher threw his kid’s baby down the toilet.
Léone
A baby?
Mrs Schmidt
The butcher’s helper did it. Some Turk who got the guy’s kid pregnant. The butcher didn’t even notice his daughter’s big belly. He was always busy in his shop, pounding meat.
It was a Sunday, they were having lunch. The kid said, “I don’t feel so good,” and she got up and went to the toilet. And she delivered right there, in the toilet. The big sister who knew what was up, called for an ambulance: “My sister’s giving birth, come quick, please!”
The butcher came running in. His kid was there, dripping with blood. And there was a baby, lying right there in the toilet. The man flushed with anger.
Léone
This stuff makes me sick to my stomach, Ma.
Mrs Schmidt
He took the baby and threw it into the bowl, head first. When the ambulance arrived the butcher’s wife said: “It’s nothing, just my daughter. She has very painful periods; heavy flow.” The ambulance driver looked down at the pool of blood on the floor. There was blood all over the place. Then, the nurse glanced into the bowl, and what did she see?!… Two tiny baby legs!
Léone
A Turk, you said?
Mrs Schmidt
Arab, Italian, Portuguese, I don’t remember. It’s all in the paper…
Give me the string for the turkey.
The butcher’s in jail. His wife and his two daughters have been charged as accessories.
Back in Rimling, they haven’t got a butcher now. The baby’s doing fine. It’s a girl.
Léone
Turkey makes me sick, Ma!
Mrs Schmidt
Shut up and set the table!
(Léone faints. They all look at her. Black out. Violent epilogue.)

Dédé
Are you going to throw up, Léone?
Mr Schmidt
She’s always throwing up! At her wedding! At Christmas! She is a neurotic!
Mrs Schmidt
It’s better to throw up than to keep it down; don’t keep it down.
Dédé
Go to the toilet!
(Léone throws up in the living-room)
Mr Schmidt
You could’ve gone to the toilet, don’t you think?!

Mon amour… mon amour… mon amour…

(At the Schmidts. Léone is lying in bed covered with blood, with the baby at her side. The scene opens on a conversation between the paramedic who was summoned by Léone, and Mrs Schmidt, who has just walked in.)
Mrs Schmidt
She went to Rimling? To the butcher’s?
Paramedic
On the way back!… On her way there, she stole a white uniform from a department store.
Mrs Schmidt
But the butcher’s in jail?!
Paramedic
His nephew is! They’re all butchers in that family!
Mrs Schmidt
Will she go to jail?
Paramedic
I’m waiting for the police! If the baby’s parents take it to court, she hasn’t got a chance. She nuts or something?
Mrs Schmidt
She is sterile. She had a false pregnancy!
Paramedic
My wife once told me: “Henry, you should get sterilized. The pill gives me headaches.” I said: “Use an IUD”. She said: “I don’t trust ’em!”. We got four kids already. I’m just an electrician… and a part-time paramedic! I’m a brave guy! I should get sterilized? No way!
Mrs Schmidt
My husband worked for Peugeot for forty years. My son-in-law is a taxidermist, and a good one too! I’m a widow, and I’ve got cancer!… Oh God!
Mrs Schmidt
So she poured animal blood all over her!?
Paramedic
She called and said: “Come quick, I’ve just had a baby!”
Léone
O darling!… darling… darling…
(Dédé walks in carrying a little dog, a chihuahua.)
Dédé
It cost me six thousand francs!
Paramedic
I thought it was the police!

(A few months later. The case of the stolen baby has made the front pages. Léone has been found guilty. Dédé and Léone are back in their bedroom…)
Dédé
They should have stuck it to you and sent you to jail! Suspended sentence for what you did! Stealing a child… How low can you get?
Léone
(To Dédé who is shaking her.)
You’re hurting me, Dédé!
Dédé
I am a taxidermist, and there aren’t many of us!… What about my business? I’m finished! You’re out of your mind, you know that?
Léone
Your business? I don’t give a damn about your business!… I don’t give a damn!

You’re getting uglier. Women are so fragile!

23 — Séquence V À Rimling, bourg de Moselle — Scène 1

23 — Sequence V In Rimling, a small town in Moselle — Scene 1

(Léone and Dédé have settled in Rimling, to a life of filth and dissolution. Rumors are flying, the neighbors are complaining. Overlapping speeches.)
Paramedic and a neighbor
They told me down at city hall: they’re new in town, and they’re making such a scandal! I told them down at city hall: Their names are Léone and Dédé. They drink and fight! They told me down at city hall: Their rent isn’t paid! The water and the electricity have been turned off! I told them down at city hall: They threw away the money they had, and they had plenty. They don’t have any anymore. They told me down at city hall: stuffed animals, rats, filth, madness! I told them down at city hall: We cleaned up everything. Dédé got angry and threatened us. He’s got a gun! They told me down at city hall: These people are dangerous! I told them down at city hall: They’ve lost all sense of dignity! They told me down at city hall: We’ve never seen anything like it in Rimling!
I told my wife and kids that destiny, alas, had taken a hand in Léone and Dédé’s lives!
Woman gas station attendant
(At the same time as the paramedic and the neighbor.)
The people who moved in got to Rimling at Easter! She’s as filthy as a sow! He spends all his time on his moped! A pair of crazies! Their house is a real pigsty! They haven’t paid their rent, and the water has been cut off! And their dog’s an oversexed shrimp who never stops barking! She steals to get food for the dog! Someone finally called the authorities, who notified city hall, and city hall sent over the janitorial squad, who cleaned the place from top to bottom! There were rats, rats all over the place, and tons of old newspapers! And the guy was screaming! He said that the newspapers kept him warm, that they bore witness to the past, that he was going to give them to the public library! And then there were all those stuffed animals, you wouldn’t believe how many: squirrels, does, donkeys. And they stunk to high heaven! They’d been chewed to pieces by the rats! He said he was going to give them to Rimling’s Museum of Natural History, but we don’t even have a Museum of Natural History in Rimling!! Besides, we’d rather get a few more movie theatres and a new pizzeria! My hat’s off to city hall, that janitorial squad did a good job. Those slobs are going to be thrown out! Thanks again, city hall!

Excusez-moi, Je sens mauvais! On m’a coupé l’eau!

Woman gas station attendant
You look a little funny. You from Rimling?
Léone
Sorry I smell so bad! The water’s been cut off at my place. My husband’s an artiste. Let me have some gas!
Woman gas station attendant
Get the hell out of here, you crazy nut! I’ve seen this moped before; it belongs to that madman!
Léone
I can pay! Léon, say hello to the lady! Isn’t my chihuahua just beautiful? My mother’s dead, my father too. I’m looking for work. You wouldn’t need a cleaning lady, would you?
Woman gas station attendant
Lucien! Come out here! It’s that crazy lady from Rimling and her mutt.
Léone
They stuck me in an insane asylum!
Woman gas station attendant

25 — Séquence VI La cavalle de Dédé — Scène 1

25 — Sequence VI Dédé on the run — Scene 1

(The farmer’s wife has turned Dédé in. He is to be tried for raping a sow. The scene takes place in the office of the woman prosecutor heading the pre-trial investigation.)
Prosecutor
Have you considered the gravity of what you did?
Dédé
I haven’t considered anything. I am not some pervert. I was momentarily out of control, because of Léone. She’s gone off her rocker.
Prosecutor
A bruised spleen resulting from the aroused sexual appetite of a boar that the pathetic person you are had led there! That’s nothing to sneeze at, mister.
Dédé
I came on my moped, and pretty much forced my way into the pigsty. I undressed with the warm smell of pig all around me, I mean sow. Pig, sow, it’s the same thing, anyway. The sows started sniffing at me, and the boar started sniffing their pussy. A boar can tell if a sow’s in heat, and a little later I got into one myself. I just lost it for a moment.
Prosecutor
On the night of the 9th tracks leading up to number 6-9-5 discovered in sow offal. Fingerprints found on the back of 6-9-5. On the 10th, 6-9-5 aborts, dropping 10 piglets, dies on the 17th. Your footprints were found, mail order shoes bought from Spiegel’s. Did you order shoes from Spiegel’s?
Dédé
Yes I did, Mam.
Prosecutor
What did you do to poor little 6-9-5 that could have led to her death?
Dédé
I just stuck it in!
Prosecutor
Had you noticed that she was going to give birth?
Dédé
6-9-5? No I hadn’t, Mam.
Prosecutor
What on earth got into you?
Dédé
I brought roses to Léone in the psychiatric ward every day. She was in that ward a year. When she got out, she never even thanked me, and she should have. Long stems run twenty-five francs a piece! I wasn’t trying to hurt those sows, I swear it!
My wife had left me, and the sows seemed to understand. I just lost it for a minute.

Dédé

Farmer’s Wife

Dédé

Farmer’s Wife

Dédé
Léone doesn’t love me anymore. I need to be loved.
Farmer’s Wife

29 — Séquence VII Érrance et folie de Léone (suite) — Scène 2

29 — Sequence VII Wanderings and Madness of Léone (cont’d) — Scene 2

Ovaires improductifs! J’en suis là! Je vais me foutre à l’eau!
On verra bien! Adieu Léon!
(Elle se jette à l’eau. Léon hurle à la mort.)

(Léone by the river, with her dog Léon.)
Léone
I used to have eyes like leaves, deep and green. Now they’re empty. All because of my ovaries. My unfertile ovaries! That’s what I’ve come to. I’m going to throw myself in the river. I don’t know how to swim.
And the river flows on and despair infuses my dishevelled soul.
When did the change occur? Maybe it was in my mother’s dining room, somewhere between the apples… on the buffet… and the naugahyde chairs and the wall-hanging with the deers at the pond! And my father’s Riesling!
Nothing happened… nothing. I made everything so melodramatic… I deluded myself.
And the river flows on and I call out to death!
How long do you keep on hoping for life when you drown?
Does it hurt when you take in water? And when your lungs give out, can you stand the pain? At what point does it bring on death?
Can you see the fish swimming around you? And the seaweed? And can you still hear… the sound of the river? No, all you hear is the buzzing in your ears from the water pouring in. But what if you keep your mouth closed? Do you swallow anyway? No you don’t, but it gets in just the same, through your nose.
Death appears… suddenly… right where you were hoping it would… and carries you away before you even know it! Poor little ragdoll, dripping wet!
We shall see! Farewell Léone!
(She jumps into the river. Léon is howling at the moon.)

30 — Sequence VII Wanderings and Madness of Léone (cont’d) — Scene 3

Si ma femme me voyait!
(À Léone.)
C’est quoi votre adresse?
Léone
Je n’ai plus d’adresse!
Le pompier
Je vous pose, vous êtes lourde! J’attends les gendarmes.
Léone
Les gendarmes!!
Le pompier
Vous êtes un visage connu… Qui êtes-vous?
Léone
La princesse de Monaco!
(Elle s’enfuit.)
Le pompier
Tanpis! Dieu!
Non! C’est un Chihuahua!

(A meadow near the river. Enter a paramedic, carrying Léone.)
Paramedic
For someone who loves women the way I do, who loves their little bush and their smell of fennel, I’m amazed I haven’t gotten turned on carrying this one! Of course dripping wet the way she is, she’s as heavy as a ton of bricks, and half dead too!
They’re crazy over there in Rimling! People killing kids! Drownings!
Léone
(Regaining consciousness.)
Mommy, daddy, where are you? Am I already here?
Paramedic
She thinks I’m Saint Peter. My name is Henry, Mam.
Léone
Oh my God! The Paramedic! Is it the same one from before?
Paramedic
I was transferred to Rimling… I got a promotion.
(To himself.)
If my wife could see me now!
(To Léone.)
Where do you live?
Léone
I don’t live anywhere anymore.
Paramedic
I’m going to put you down, you’re heavy. I’ll wait for the police to come.
Léone
The police!!
Paramedic
You look awfully familiar… Who are you?
Léone
The Princess of Monaco.
(She runs off.)
Paramedic
Too bad! I’ll have to make something up for the police. I could have sworn it was that crazy lady from Rimling… God! How beautiful a meadow looks in the Fall. I’m going to get my feet wet a little. A Paramedic who takes his boots off is still a Paramedic just the same!
(Léon the dog walks by.)
Paramedic
(Spoken.)
Is that a rabbit or a weasel?… No, it’s a chihuahua!

31 — Sequence VIII Dédé on the run (cont’d) — Scene 1

(A gas station in Rimling. Dédé pulls in on his moped, towing a stuffed sow on roller skates.)
Dédé
Give me twenty-five francs’ worth.
Woman gas station attendant
Lucien, come out here! It’s that crazy guy!
Dédé
I said twenty-five francs’ worth. And watch out, I’m the nervous type. I have lost Léone, who lost everything, even her honor. And you know where you can stick my honor? Up the mammal! I’ve always been into big mammals!
Woman gas station attendant
Lucien, hurry!
Dédé
I got my moped back, but no wife and no gas. Have you seen my wife?
Woman gas station attendant
Get the hell out of here, you’re crazy!
Dédé
You’re not going to answer me?
(He pulls out his rifle.)
Scared?
Woman gas station attendant
Oh my God! He’s got a gun! I have a daughter I love!
(He shoots, she falls dead.)
Dédé
You should never refuse me anything… The other lady refused me her sows and I shot her. I can’t stand being made fun of!
(Léon the dog walks by.)

32 — Sequence VIII Dédé on the run (cont’d) — Scene 2

Dédé
Léon! Et Léone?!… Il va me conduire à Léone! Va Léon! Va!
(Riant.)
Ah! Ah!… Du calme! C’est une lampe de poche! Tu as un regard de coupable!
(S’approchant de la cochette.)
C’est une truie?!
Dédé
C’est une truie!
Le clochard
Empailler une truie! Un oiseau d’accord, mais une truie!
Dédé
Je suis un artiste! Je ne fais que du grand mammifère!
Le clochard
(Sifflement admiratif…)
Beau boulot! On voit pas les coutures!
Dédé
Touche pas! Retire tes pattes! Vieux dégoûtant!
Le clochard
(Riant.)
Ah! Ah!… Tu me dégoûtes!». J’ai manqué de tendresse! Monsieur! J’ai soif!
Dédé
(Le repoussant avec violence.)
Casse-toi! Tu pues!
Le clochard
(Rigolard.)
Ah! Ah!…
Vite!
(Il prend Léon et s’enfuit.)

Dédé
Léon! Léone!… He’s going to lead me to Léone! Go on, Léon, go on boy.
(He climbs on his moped and disappears, following Léon.)
Scene 2
(The outskirts of Strasburg. A dark, humid setting, with Dédé, his moped, the dog Léon and the sow on roller skates.)
Dédé
Hold it right there, you pig! What’s that light you’re shining on my shoulder? Get it off of me! I don’t like anyone touching my shoulder!
(He grabs his rifle.)
Put your hands up!
Bum
(Laughing.)
Hey, take it easy fella. It’s just a flashlight. You act like someone with a guilty conscience.
(Moving closer to the sow.)
What’s this, a sow?
Dédé
Yeah, it’s a sow.
Bum
Stuffing a sow! A bird, ok, but a sow?
Dédé
I’m an artiste. I only work on large mammals.
Bum
(Whistling in admiration…)
Nice job! You can’t even see the seams!
Dédé
Don’t touch it. Keep your hands off, you filthy old man!
Bum
(Laughing.)
My wife always used to say to me: “I don’t love you anymore, you’re disgusting, especially your hands!” So I started drinking. She used to say: “Dédé” My real name’s André “Dédé, you’re disgusting!” I didn’t get the love I needed. Hey, I’m thirsty.
Dédé
(Pushing him away.)
Get the hell away from me. You stink!
Bum
(Having a good laugh.)
Yeah… like a pig!
My wife was a school teacher. In Rimling! The town butcher threw his daughter’s kid down the toilet!… A murderer! Throwing a baby down the toilet! A baby!
Dédé
Shut your face! Get your hands up!… Let me by!
(He fires at the bum, but it doesn’t seem to have any effect.)
Come on Léon! Quick!
(He grabs Léon and runs off.)

34 — Séquence IX Dédé retrouve Léone en gare de Strasbourg — Scène 1

34 — Sequence IX Dédé finds Léone in the train station in Strasburg — Scene 1

Mon amour! tu m’as retrouvée!

(The toilet in the train station in Strasburg. Léone, who is ’in charge’ of the toilets, is throwing out an African who has been washing his private parts in the sink.)
Léone
I’m going to call the police! The nerve of you showing your ass to a poor woman like me! Get the hell out of here! Can’t you wash yourself at home? Negroes! These people go around naked all the time! And they pull out their dicks in front of anybody! This is Strasburg not the Cameroons! I keep my toilets clean! Pigs like you I throw out! My mother kept things clean! Pull up your pants or I’ll cut it off! The thing he’s got there, you’d think he was a bull. These Negro people are hung like you wouldn’t believe!
(The African runs away. The enormous stuffed sow on roller skates appears in the doorway to the toilets, with Léon the dog on its shoulders!)
Léone
Oh Léon, darling Léon! You have found me! These little guys are tough as nails. A remarkable chihuahua!
(Suddenly wondering about the sow.)
What is this mammoth here?

35 — Séquence IX Dédé retrouve Léone en gare de Strasbourg — Scène 2

35 — Sequence IX Dédé finds Léone in the train station in Strasburg — Scene 2

(Dédé apparaît alors. Sa carabine est dissimulée sous son imper.)
Dédé
Ma Léone! Je te retrouve!… Tu admires mon travail?!
Tu me manques! Sans toi je ne peux pas vivre!
Léone
Je t’avais oublié Dédé!
Dédé
Ne dis pas ça! Explique-moi! Tu as toujours ton regard vert!
Léone
La ferme Dédé! Tout est fini! Tout est fini Dédé!
Dédé
Ne dis pas ça mon amour! Mon amour!

(Enter Dédé, with his rifle hidden under his raincoat.)
Dédé
Oh darling Léone! I have found you!… What do you think of my work? Nice, huh? A stuffed sow for Christmas, a real work of art! Why all this silence, darling? I carried the smell of your skin in my nostrils!
Léone
I just finished mopping my toilet and you’re dragging in mud all over the place.
Dédé
Don’t be vulgar, Léone. Listen to me. The very first time I saw you, I looked inside your mouth, inside your armpits, inside your thighs, inside your vagina. There was first rate velvet everywhere! You’re coming with me, Léone! That’s an order!
Léone
You’ve gone completely nuts, Dédé.
Dédé
You can’t make an omelet without breaking eggs. I’m a sugar bowl without sugar. I miss you. I can’t go on without you.
Léone
I had forgotten you, Dédé.
Dédé
Don’t say that. Tell me how it happened. I never sensed the moment when everything changed. What happened in Rimling? And before that? You still have that green look about you.
Léone
Shut your trap, Dédé. It’s all over. It’s over, Dédé!
Dédé
Don’t say that, darling. Oh my darling!
Léone
Get the hell out of here, Dédé. Your shoes are disgusting. I’m closing up. It’s time for me to go. I’m tired, I’m closing up.
Dédé
Don’t do that Léone. Don’t!
(He pulls out his rifle and shoots Léone who falls to the floor.)
