The premiere of Michel Chion’s composition L’Isle sonante, produced at the Ina-GRM studios, will be held Sunday March 17, 2002. The composer also gives several lectures on the formality of musique concrete at the Maison de Radio France on March 6, 13, 27 and April 3 and 4, 2002.

Louis Dufort is the guest composer for this year’s “Symphonie portuaire” (Harbour Symphony), held near Pointe-à-Callière (Montréal), Sunday March 3, 2002 at 2pm. Intonarumori, for tape, boat horns, church bells and live audio processing on a specially designed software, will also be transmitted live on Radio-Canada’s Chaîne culturelle.

The film My Cinema for the Ears (“Mein Kino für die Ohren”) by German filmmaker Uli Aumüller on the electroacoustic music / musique concrète of Francis Dhomont and Paul Lansky was premiered February 7, 2002 at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin (Germany). An ironic and impressionistic look at nature and the creative process “Mein Kino für die Ohren” is about the art and environment of two composers. The film was also presented in competition during the 20th FIFA (Festival international du film sur l’art) on March 15, 2002 at the Goethe-Institut in Montréal. Francis Dhomont’s composition Un autre Printemps, featured in the soundtrack, was premiered in December 2001 at Rien à voir (10), produced by Réseaux. It also recently won the 2nd prize at the “Ear ’01” competition held by the Hungarian radio. My Cinema for the Ears is an ambiophonic DVD-Video with French, English and German subtitles coproduced by inpettofilms (Germany) and Bridge Records (USA).

The annual SEAMUS (Society for Electro-Acoustic Music in the United States) national conference will be held in Iowa City (USA), April 4 - 6, 2002. Denis Smalley is the guest composer and will present his composition Base Metals, available on the album Sources / scènes. He will also participate in various panel discusions. One of the research presentations take one of Gilles Gobeil’s composition as subject; Joseph Harchanko’s paper, “Using Spectro-morpholgy to Explain Structuring Process in Gilles Gobeil’s ‘Le vertige inconnu’.” This piece is released on Gobeil’s first CD, La mécanique des ruptures.

January 24 to 29, 2002, Robert Normandeau, with collegues Réjean Poirier and Jean Saulnier from the music faculty of the University of Montréal, gave both a concert and a conference at the national superior music and dance conservatory in Lyon (France). His pieces “Le renard et la rose” (Figures) and “Erinyes” (Clair de terre) were played at the concert. He also gave a lecture to the students about his composition Clair de terre. The composer then moved to Marseille where he worked with the “Holophon,” a sonic spatialisation system conceived at the GMEM (Marseille’s experimental music group). The GMEM commissioned a work by the composer.

Yves Daoust is one of the guest composers at the Ninth Annual Ussachevsky Festival at Pomona College (Claremont, CA). Late afternoon, the composer will give a conference about his work. In the evening, his composition “Impromptu” (mixed version, taken from the album Bruits) will be interpreted by pianists Genevieve Feiwen Lee and Gideon Rubin.
