A Todd Drootin által életrehívott Books on Tape formáció mindenképpen kielégíti a kiadója által támasztott feltételeket, miszerint alkotásai elég nehezen skatulyázhatóak be. A kanadai mûvész beatpunk néven jellemezte saját számait, ami nagyjából fedi is a valóságot, de ezzel együtt valami elektronikus dologra gondoljunk és akkor már képben is vagyunk. Helyenként a Kid 606 ugrik be, a váltások és a gegek terén, de itt azért nincs akkora zúzás, sõt az Oceania címû szám már majdnem downtempo, lehet rá bólogatni is. A 120 grammos, strandpapucskék bakelit 3 figyelemreméltó dalocskát tartalmaz a többit pedig a hamarosan megjelenõ, második Books on Tape nagylemez rejti.

His excellent album impressed us jaded twats here at Absorb towers and this is pretty much more of the same. Calling his style of music ‘beatpunk’ — combining the energy of rogue punk with the instrumentation of electronic music — seems an apt name to give it. It’s a name that could also be shared by several other artists as well, who seem to be taking cues from electronica’s experimentation and wrapping it around their indie.

The title track is heavy stuff; like Dj Shadow battling with organs and lo-slung b-lines. Coming on like a spy movie theme replete with that all essential zither vibe. Oceania is inverted funk; growling chords dirty what is otherwise a laid back diversion. Track and Field Song is a superb way out of here. Just a melting pot mix of sub-rave style chords, playful melodies and a bizarre cacophony of vocal snatches. Take heed from Mr. Books: throw down your laptops!

Vers vocht uit de druipende uiers van het Canadese No Type-label. Het duo Coin Gutter maakt niets ontziende, hard industriële en dan weer sacrale elektronische ambient en noise, vaak doorspekt met moderne compositie. Denk aan Yannis Kyriakides in een remix door Merzbow.

Oeuf Korreckt is, ondanks zijn lullige groepsnaam, een bijzonder groovy elektronicacollectief dat met scherpe, licht industriële ritmes erg doeltreffend uit de hoek komt. Alleen jammer van die introverte, weinig verheffende productie.

De sampling-artieste Diane Labrosse werkte de voorbije tien jaar met klinkende namen zoals Ikue Mori, Martin Tétreault en Zeena Parkins. Elektronicafreak A_Dontigny was dan weer lid van het beruchte collectief Napalm Jazz. Tesamen brengen Labrosse en Dontigny spannende, verrassende en verontrustende elektronica -en ambientpassages die je het best beluistert met de deur op slot en het huisalarm op extra sensitive.

We Remain Faded van Headphone Science is de meest beklijvende release bij No Type. Met zijn mix van stuiterende hiphop en aan flarden gesneden raps leunt dit project van Dustin Craig nog het meest aan bij Prefuse 73. Maar de epische soundtrackmuziek die Craig in zijn composities verstopt, sleept deze plaat weg uit het avanthophoekje.

Twee erg leuke 10inch-vinylletjes zijn die van de Zweedse Claudia Bonarelli en de Amerikaan Todd Brooks a.k.a. Books on Tape. Met respectievelijk wollige clickhouse en punky elektrobeats zetten zij de street credibility van No Type extra in de verf.

A tough one to track down, this, but well worth the effort, for Los Angeles’ Todd Drootin is a genius. Vaulting praise, but entirely warranted, because here Books seems to take his inspiration from libraries, creating music based around both the punctuation and the plot he’s found in any random tome. The savagery of his electronic percussion echoes commas, colons and full-stops, guiding the listener through his dense (entirely instrumental) narrative, taking you by the hand into a cold, hard underworld where nothing is as it seems and danger lurks around every corner. Love electronica? Love Books On Tape. Hate electronica? STILL love Books On Tape.
