A very fine production by Andrew Lewis, released on CD. Six electroacoustic works composed between 1987 and 2012, for a total of 76 minutes. Lewis’s strengths are his knack for movement, sense of restraint, and narrative arcs. His pieces develop like stories (about his kids in Scherzo, about Wales in Cân, about a young dyslexic poet in Lexicon). To my surprise, I connect more with his earlier pieces. Scherzo (1992-93) is absolutely adorable without getting cute. And Ascent (1994-97) transcends the rather formalistic evocations of contrasting landscapes (sea, mountains, sky) that serves as its basis.
