In contrast to Mark Polscher’s disc of pure electronic music reviewed above, the German composer Hans Tutschku gravitates closer to the concrete tradition, despite his associations both with Karlheinz Stockhausen and Ircam extrémités lointaines (1996) uses recordings of city sounds from South East Asia The more concentrated, unified … erinnerung… (“Memento”, also 96) reflects a recent concern with speech as the basis for acousmatic transformations, and uses granular synthesis to break sounds into their constituent elements and reassemble or stretch them. Highly recommended.

Encore une production de l’excellent label canadien empreintes DIGITALes, cette fois-ci avec l’artiste de Toronto Randall Smith, spécialiste entre autre de musiques de film. Toujours dans une veine électroacoustique, cet album innove tant par la pallete impressionante de sons utilisés que par l’ingéniosité et l’inventivité des créations ainsi obtenues. Smith, après avoir donc travaillé pour le septième art, est devenu une référence dans le petit monde de l’électroacoustique, ayant présenté ses travaux dans le monde entier, et reçus moults récompenses méritées. En effet, cet album est surprenant autant que captivant Randall Smith détient les clés de son monde étrange, et nous les livre petit à petit, morceau après morceau, note après note, pour ouvrir les portes d’un paradis sonore impressionnant de maturité et de cohérence. En mélangeant les sources acoustiques et digitales, la pureté des sons gagne en crédibilité. On retrouve ça et là des morccaux éparses de flûte, de guitare, de cuivres, de cordes, etc… savamment assemblés en une construction sonore avant-gardiste. Pour une oreille peu habituée à ces sonorités, on pourrait penser à une orchestre symphonique en train de s’accorder, mais cette pensée est certes reductrice, tant ce travail est fourni et intense, sur la corde raide. Entre calme ambient et rêveries industrielles, sur fonds de tambourin imaginaires. Excellent!

Der kanadische Musiker Randall Smith widmete sich bisher ùberwiegend der Komposition und Aufnahme von Soundtracks, vornehmlich fiir Low-Budget-Filme einer kleinen Finna in Toronto, und wurde schon mit einigen intemationalen Preisen honoriert. Was er mit seinen mir vorliegenden rein musikalischen Arbeiten zustande bringt, solite jedem Liebhaber experimenteller Musik uneingeschrankt empfohien werden. Sondes. eine Zusammenstellung verschiedener Aufnahmen der letzten fùnf Jahre, enthalt eine Klangmelange, die mitreiDende Soundtornados ruid absolute Windstille in kiirzester Zeit aufeinanderprallen lassl, und bringt dies so gekonut zustande, dass an keiner Stelle Hektik aufzukommen scheint. Schon dus 14-minütige InsideOut enthalt alle Qualitäten des Albums: Ein kurzer drohnender Sound dringt in die Gehörgänge ein, um abrupt abzubrechen und die Musik hn klanglichen Chaos versinken zu lassen. Allerhand gesampelte Gertiusche verbinden sich mit rein elektronischen Klangen, und plôtzlich treten einige erdige Sounds auf den Plan, die mehr und mehr nach herkömmlichen Instrumenten oder Naturgerduschen klingen. Hore ich da im Hintergrund sogar das kurze Zupfen einer Akustikgitarre, oder wur es nur ein geschicktes Tauschungsmanover? Summt mir gerade eine Stechmùcke um die Ohren, oder ist es immer noch Randall Smith? Auf einmal wird es sehr still, und plötzlich ist das Drone wieder da, wie ein Strudel, der alles nach unten zieht. Nicht alle weiteren Stùcke konnen mit der beeindruckonden Atmosphare des Openers mithalten, doch wird es wahrend der mehr als 70 Minuten dauernden Spieizeit nie wirklich langweilig. Klassische Soundquellen wie Altflöte und Akkordeon sowie Kontrabass und andere Streichinstrumente werden in die Musik integriert. und alles mùndet in den finalen Trommelwirbel des letzten Stucks. Zustitzlichen Kaufanreiz bietet das liebevoll gestaltete Digipack. welches mit einem 28seitigen Booklet aufwartet.

Sondes est une aventure, une aventure profonde dans un univers à la fois troublant et intrigant. Exigeant une écoute attentive de la part de l’auditeur, je crois que ce disque saura plaire aux néophytes de la musique électroacoustique. Randall Smith, jusqu’en 1995, a composé de la musique purement électroacoustique pour ensuite orienter sa création vers des pièces mixtes, qui superposent instruments classiques et bandes. Les manipulations sonores exhibent une texture riche et intelligente qui laisse entrevoir, au moment opportun, «une trace perceptible de la signature originale des sons». Personnellement, InsideOut et Convergence sont les pièces qui ont marqué mes premières écoutes, mais Sondes est un disque profond; il faut donc s’y laisser prendre pour en découvrir les plus infimes subtilités.

Wasn’t empreintes DIGITALes that electroacoustic label? It isn’t than also surprising to read that Hans Tutschku studied electroacoustic composition in Dresden (where he toured alongside Karlheinz Stockhausen) and on the royal conservatory in The Hague. No he is already professor electroacoustics on the Liszt Conservatory in Weimar.

The context and the experience linked with the recording are important for the definitive form for the composition. Hans Tutschku: “In extrémités lointaines I use a wide variety of sounds resulting from travels through four countries, these countries, these connections remain very strong. The piece is structured in 15 sections describing different locations. The intensity of the impressions I experienced during the trip has resulted in a dense compositional structure.”

Hans Tutschku likes to use ‘speech’ in his composition as an instrument. So he says “Les invisibles is a composition based on vocal and instrumental sounds which create a soundscape corresponding to the text” or for Sieben Stufen: “All sounds are derived from electronic manipulation of two recordings of the poem spoken by four different voices (two in German and two in French).” The text is sometimes totally destroyed only the manipulation of the sound (of the voice) stays right up.

Especially the piece extrémités lointaines gets my attention. Maybe just because of the less prominent role of the voice. Also the second piece … erinnerung… is one that I like much. Here we get a very dense even aggressive sound wherein the voice is used very expressive. The tree other songs are maybe a little bit to academic for me. Although it stays a very interesting and extreme sonic experience for my untrained ears.

The English title is “The Mechanics of Cleavage,” and brings you 8 tracks of mysterious music. In a few tracks Gilles Gobeil has some co-operation from Suzanne Binet-Audet (ondes Martenot), René Lussier (electric guitar) and Lyette Limoges with text and scenario.

It is mysterious music that brings you a soundscape of sounds as you think you are walking on a outer space planet where you have go through several places with obstacles. Doors of sounds opens, sounds apears and go away again. It is almost moviemusic or music that can be used in a dark space movie. The first track Le vertige inconnu (1993) really suits in this explenation as it really brings you in this atmosphere.

The second track Voix blanche is in collaboration with Suzanne Binet-Audet who plays one of the earliest electronic instruments the ondes Martenot. The atmosphere and style is almost the same as the first track, only apart from some details such as a string sound.

All other tracks has the same atmosphere apart from some details in the tracks who changes the mood of the tracks in an other direction. We encounter hypnotic moods, industrial sounds and…

Different is the track 4 La ville machine (1992), “The Machine City” a better explanation you can’t find to describe the atmosphere in his music. This piece is a collaboration with Lyette Limoges who worked out a text and scenario for this musical play with the subject of sound ecology. A French text (with full English translation in the booklet) accompanies the story. It is just brillant this story and the atmosphere created in the sounds, it makes from it a cult Sience Fiction story.

The last track is his most earlier work, without using sounds that you almost can find anywhere in the world for creating his atmospheres, he uses sounds that comes from synthesizers and electronics. Here you can hear which way he wanted to go to, and we must say that his later work where he plays in a magnificent way with sounds from our civilisation (street, home, industry…) is better for creating his musical worlds. A thick little booklet is added in this brillant CD, with full explanation of the artists and the tracks, in French and English.
