He told me that I was to come through a terrible lot, in my time, “and you’ll lose a lot of blood,” he said.

Il m’a dit que je subirais beaucoup d’épreuves terribles, «et vous perdrez beaucoup de sang», a-t-il dit.

“But don’t let it scare you” — and he says “don’t let anything scare you.”

«Mais ne laissez pas cela t’effrayer» — et il a dit, «ne laissez rien t’effrayer».

Well…

Alors…

We were surrounded by Germans, at the time.

Nous étions encerclés par les Allemands, à l’époque.

And we were out to the last round. We’d only one round left in our rifles.

Et nous étions réduits à la dernière cartouche. Nous avions seulement une cartouche dans nos fusils.

And, ah, I got down on my knees. I had the rifle ready to blow my own brains out…

Et, ah, je me suis mis à genoux. J’avais le fusil prêt à me faire éclater le cerveau…

And ah, I am shaking a lot with nerves after it, thinking of it.

Ah, je tremble encore beaucoup, quand j’y pense.

And I got down on me knees and I looked up to the sky, you know, what you do if you were going to pray there.

Et je me suis mis à mes genoux et je regardais en haut au ciel, vous savez, comme si vous alliez prier.

And I was going… you know… and there was like what we thought a [crack] of thunder.

Et j’allais… vous savez… et il y avait comme un [craquement] de tonnerre.

And I just looked up, and the clouds parted, this big cloud parted.

Je regardais en haut et les nuages se séparaient, et un gros nuage a éclaté.

And this man came out with a flaming sword.

Et cet homme est sorti avec une épée en flamme.

He was like a man. At that time I couldn’t say that he had wings on him.

Il était comme un homme. À ce moment-là, je ne pouvais pas dire s’il avait des ailes.

But the Germans, some of them let a yell out and they turned and they fled. And one of them said in English “the world’s at an end”… and they all cleared off.

Mais les allemands, certains criaient et s’enfuyaient. Et l’un d’eux dit en anglais «c’est la fin du monde»… et ils fuyaient.

Well now there was… none of the fellows could say that they’d seen it, because none of them were looking up, they were all too busy, you know, praying for their last…

Alors, il n’y avait… aucun de mes collègues qui ne pouvaient dire qu’ils l’avaient vu, car ils ne regardaient pas en l’air, ils étaient trop occupés à prier, ils pensaient que c’était leur fin…

Not that I could tell it — no-one would believe me. Nobody would believe me!

Je ne pouvais rien dire — personne ne me croirait. Personne ne me croirait!

Well now what I thought I saw was an angel,

Alors, la chose que je croyais avoir vue était un ange,

but it was a man… that I could make out. That he was a man.

mais c’était un homme… que je voulais faire croire. Que c’était un homme.

And somehow or other you know I was… it was the first time I think ever I was afraid in my life during the war.

Et d’une certaine manière ou d’une autre, j’étais… c’était la première fois de ma vie que j’ai eu peur pendant cette guerre.
