“I did not meet Jean-Claude until 1970 when we became lifelong friends. This talented composer, pianist and scientist is responsible for the first important computer music. Curiously, this work won The Dartmouth Arts Council Prize in 1969 in a competition for electroacoustic music which I organized. The judges were Milton Babbit, George B. Wilson and Vladimir Ussachevsky. The material in “Mutations” was mostly created at the Bell Telephone Laboratories.” — Jon Appleton
