In autumn 1994 I had seen a television documentary about child-slavery in Pakistan, and was deeply affected by it, especially the depiction of twelve-year-old Iqbal Masih’s struggle for the children’s rights and freedom. So when in april I heard the news that he had been shot I felt deeply sorrowed. It was this quiet mourning at a distance that gave rise to Epitaphe pour Iqbal Masih. After this piece I have been working with the music for two full-length television doucumentaries on the life and death of Iqbal Masih directed by Swedish film-director Magnus Bergmar. The documentaries will be shown in a number of countries throughout the world in order to celebrate United Nations’ declaration for human rights.

Épitaphe pour Iqbal Masih was commissioned by GMEB in France and composed in the studios Circé and Charybde at the GMEB in 1995.
