This work is the first in which I confronted an extra-musical ‘theme’. It expresses, or tries to express, the feeling of violence. In Latin America we all have experimented with different kinds of violence but, in what is called the ‘third world’, we are exposed to violence of many kinds: military, economic, political. This has been especially true in Argentina where, during the 1970s, we lived under one of the cruellest dictatorships of Latin America, with 30,000 people disappearing in an unresolved drama known all over the world. I wanted to reflect a part of this situation in my work, not with a violent work or a work with obvious reference to violent situations — like very loud or very sharp sounds, or very fast successions of them — which would serve to imitate the violence. Instead I wanted to express something like the feeling of violence, or even the memory of it. So I created different levels of tension, which are all resolved in an even deeper tension, leading all of them to an end which is, of course, open and unresolved. The sounds were selected according to the particular situations of tension chosen for each section and, in the more dramatic one (towards the end of the piece), recognisable sounds of voices, cries and human actions were set. This work was composed in my own studio thanks to a scholarship from the National Endowment of the Arts.
