Voor mijn laatste recensie gewijd aan het Canadese Empreintes DIGITALes sta ik stil bij twee albums van John Young, eerder dit jaar bij dit label verschenen. Het betreft Espaces lointains en Histoires de soldats. Young komt uit Nieuw-Zeeland, maar studeerde ook in Engeland. In zijn eigen land was hij aansluitend Senior Lecturer en directeur van de de Electroacoustic Music Studios. Sinds begin deze eeuw is hij verbonden aan het Music, Technology and Innovation Research Centre (tegenwoordig het Institute for Sonic Creativity) aan De Montfort University in Leicester (UK). Iemand die dus al geruime tijd in dit veld actief is.

Espaces lointains, dat Young componeerde voor zijn dochters vangt aan met Sweet Anticipation, met name opgebouwd rond veldopnames die hij maakte in New York, we horen duidelijk de claxons, de schreeuwende mensen, rijdende auto’s en wat er allemaal niet meer bij een grote stad hoort. Young werkt veel met veldopnames, in Arioso horen we een “chorus of crickets and the constant electronic beep of pedestrian crossing signals”. Dit “formed a texture of cyclically interlocking pitch and throbbing granular noise”. En in Hidden Spaces verwerkte hij veldopnames gemaakt bij het Åsundennear meer in Räfstad, Zweden, in Montréal en in Dobbiaco, Zuid Tirol, waar Gustav Mahler in de zomervakanties zijn symfonieën componeerde. Three Spaces in Mid-Air, uit 2017, wijkt wat af van het voorgaande. Deze compositie “is designed as a continuous work in three discrete sections. Each explores the idea of spectral space through interaction and coalescence of stratified sound… The work’s three sections also address the compression of form, each aiming to embody the atmosphere of a self-contained micro-narrative — evoking implications of direction, tension and release while balancing states of stasis and motion. Veel meer dan die eerdere stukken op dit album bestaat deze compositie uit subtiele, regelmatig vrij duistere klanknevels.

Histoires de soldats bevat slechts twee composities, het uit 2014 stammende Angel at Mons en het bijna een uur durende Once He Was a Gunner. Het eerste stuk is gebaseerd op de getuigenis van John Ewing die claimde dat hij op het slagveld bij Mons, in 1914, een engel zag. We horen hier duistere klanknevels en zo nu en dan de stem van Ewing met zijn getuigenis. Once He Was a Gunner noemt Young zelf een “radiogenic electroacoustic-documentary work”, gebaseerd op de ervaringen van zijn vader Alexander Young als soldaat tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Young interviewde zijn vader in 2005, leidend tot bandopnames die hij in dit stuk aanvult met bijpassende, vaak bijzonder spookachtige en verontrustende geluiden. Zijn vader werd geboren in Seaton Delaval, Northumberland, England in 1920 en emigreerde met zijn ouders als kind naar Nieuw-Zeeland. In 1941 nam hij dienst als artillerist en bleef daar tot 1945. Hij vocht mee in de Noord-Afrikaanse en Italiaanse campagnes en was er dus bij in El Alamein, Minqar Qaim, MonteCassino, Orsogna en aan de Senio rivier. En ergens daar in centraal Italië ontmoette hij de vrouw die de componist zijn moeder zou worden. Deze uit zesentwintig korte delen bestaande compositie “is a journey through one man’s experience of the war in Italy — living with civilians, moments of lucky escape, the fear, the camaraderie, the panacea of alcohol, and the sense of loss on returning home”. We horen het allemaal terug in deze prachtige compositie.

Nel 1941 il padre di John Young fu annoiato nell’esercito neozelandese come artigliere e poco tempo dopo partecipò alle battaglie di EI Alamein e Monte Cessino. In Once He Was a Gunner è la sua voce a raccontare gli eventi che lo videro protagonista durante la guerra, sino al momento in cui conobbe la propria futura moglie in Italia nell’inverno del 1944, quando molte unità delle forze alleate alloggiavano nelle case dei civili. In Histoires de soldats la sua testimonianza si affianca a quella di John Ewings, fuciliere dell’esercito britannico che nell’agosto del 1914 ebbe la visione di un angelo su un campo di battaglia in Francia durante la Prima Guerra Mondiale, la cui vicenda narrata nel 1980 in un programma radiofonico della BBC costituisce l’asse portante di An Angel at Mons. Storie crude e poetiche al contempo, orchestrate can un equilibrato bilanciamento fra suono sintetizzato e flusso verbale che rende l’intero lavoro una creatura ibrida fra radiodramma, composizione elettroacustica e spoken word. [7.3] L’album Espaces lointains ha invece struttura più tradizionale, spaziando fra una molteplicità di soluzioni che attingano indistintamente da scenari naturali come da ambientazioni urbane. Sweet Anticipation apre il tutto con un insieme di field recardings raccolte a New York in cui i suoni della città si mescolano e si stracana creando un affresco vivace e dinamico. In Arioso, l’ambientazione si sposta nella notte umida di Tappan Square a Oberlin nell’Ohio, can un coro di grilli e il bip elettronico dei segnali di attraversamento pedonale a creare un’atmosfera meditativa che dette la quiete notturna. Hidden Spaces è invece suddiviso in tre sezioni, ciascuna delle quali esplora uno scenario distinto spaziando dal lago Ràfstad in Svezia alle sonorità stridenti di una scala mobile nella stazione della metropolitana di Outremont a Montréal, sino al un parco animali di Altschluderbach costruito attorno al rifugio in cui Gustav Mahler creava le sue composizioni. Paesaggi sonori evocativi, ricchi di inventiva e fascino.

“Daddy, did you notice any sort of… sound when you were down there?” asks a little girl at the beginning of Hidden Spaces. It seems that all John Young does is notice sound, and in the most unexpected places. The aforementioned track combines field recordings from Lake Åsunden in Sweden, an escalator in Montréal, and a pig sty in Dobbiaco, Italy. Arioso is based around recordings of crickets and pedestrian crossing signals in Oberlin, Ohio, while Sweet Anticipation captures street preachers in New York City. It doesn’t matter so much where Young finds his sounds, though, as he builds alien digital worlds around them anyway. Identifiable sources are quick to fade away into an electronic tableau only to suddenly reappear, creating an engrossing tension between the familiar and the strange.

Das in Montréal ansässige Elektroakustik — und Akusmatik — Label empreintes DIGITALes bringt in den nächsten Tagen zwei neue Alben des aus Neuseeland stammenden und heute in Großbritannien lebenden Komponisten John Young heraus.

Espaces lointains, das dritte Album des Künstlers, das als erstes der vorliegenden Releases produziert wurde, und dessen Nachfolger Histoires de soldats zählen beide zur Gattung elektroakustischer Dokumentationen, während ersteres den akustischen Abdrücken des Verschwundenen nachspüren, basieret das andere Album zum Teil auf den Erinnerungen von Youngs Vater an dessen Einsatz im zweiten Weltkrieg, einer der Tracks trägt den Titel Once He Was a Gunner. Die Alben erscheinen beide am 28. Februar auf CD.
