Liner notes

In Two Parts

This album is in two parts. The first (the majority) is a series of pieces focusing upon single sound sources (or sound types). The second comprises two pieces that focus upon space, place and a specific time or event.

I’m very interested in the craft of electroacoustic music; understanding how music is made through shared listening, shared tools and open discussion. There is still a case for the artist. My practice is very similar to others; my tools are in “common use; my work is my own but, this is not simply another set of electroacoustic pieces.” I discuss the idea of an electroacoustic craftsperson in the article The Electroacoustic Craftsperson (Elektroakustische Handwerker*in) posted in May 2024 on soundingfuture.com.

The underscore (“_”) pieces have obvious sources developed through the same set of tools (the USSStoolskit, a set of patches made in Pure Data). I hope that for each piece, the tools — a lot of sound granulation, a lot of mixing — are used in synergy with the sounds I’m hearing and that by creating these pieces with the same tools, we can engage critically with tools and sounds, and their differences from one piece to the next.

The five underscore pieces and Voices in the Dark (2023) can be played separately or as a suite comprising any number from the set. A short and a long piece for example might enable comparison of techniques, forms, and sound sources.
