Stereo

De part et d’autre is a passage from one country to another, a journey between the different soundscapes I encountered while studying in Birmingham (United Kingdom), long waits in stations and airports on both sides of the English Channel.

Outdoor recordings are juxtaposed with various confined spaces, which are in turn juxtaposed with moving objects and instrumental transmutations that induce the energy of the piece.

De part et d’autre [On Both Sides] was realized in 2010 at the Electroacoustic Music Studios of the University of Birmingham (England, UK) and premiered on March 7, 2010 during the Sonic Fingerprints concert series produced by BEAST at the CBSO Centre in Birmingham (England, UK). De part et d’autre was a finalist in the 6th Biennial Acousmatic Composition Competition Métamorphoses (Belgium, 20210).

The sound of a common wine glass encapsulates both its banal everyday use as well as the inherent musicality of everyday objects. This ordinary sound, excited by various means, is treated with a metaphoric sonic magnifying lens, highlighting its various characteristics: attack and resonance, harmonicity and inharmonicity, rhythm and texture.

The untreated sound functions as both departure and arrival points, allowing elastic musical elaborations between each concréte bookend. This interplay, between the recognizable qoutidian sound and its more abstract modulations, acts as the main developmental motif in the piece, and is explored throughout eleven intertwined movements.

A glass is not a glass received the 3rd prize of the Sound in Space Competition (Boston, MA, USA, 2011).

Comme toujours.

Dans ce cas, des rapports possibles entre trois éléments de natures diverses.

Un: Formes. C’est-à-dire des morphologies sonores, abstraites.

Deux: Images. À comprendre comme images-icônes, c’est-à-dire des représentations sonores d’une réalité reconnaissable.

Trois: Musique… Pardon… En réalité: une image de la musique, une représentation de la musique.

présentées les représentations,
peut commencer le jeu.

C’est en réalité très simple. Partant de là, l’idée était d’explorer les relations, qu’elles soient formelles ou poétiques, entre ces différents matériaux. Comment peuvent-ils se mêler pour créer ensemble des représentations mentales qui convergent (et il va de soi qu’à l’intérieur de ces convergences il puisse y avoir des divergences). Un imaginaire cohérent en somme. Créer des ponts, des souvenirs, un inconscient.

Et puis surtout, le plaisir de traverser les frontières, ou de les rendre floues. D’amener ces sons de natures particulières aux points où ils ne correspondent plus (plus tout-à-fait), à leur définition d’origine. Là où ils commencent à se comporter comme ceux, différents, qu’ils côtoient. Là où forme, image et musique échangent leurs rôles.
