About Promenades

One theme runs through these seven compositions: the stroll. There is a piece dedicated to Folkmar Hein that evokes his long walks in Berlin and its surroundings [3]. Then there is also a surprising story about the journey through time so marvellously told in Chris Marker’s film La Jetée [1]. And I took a delightful stroll through the fertile improvisations of the ensemble Déviation(s), which I tried to map out like uncharted territory [5]. And then there is the fantastical voyage to the edge of the universe that is Stanley Kubrick’s film 2001: A Space Odyssey, guided by Yves Charuest’s saxophone [2]. And let’s not forget a quiet wandering around Debussy’s reveries [6], accompanied by François Couture at the piano, or a friendly incursion into the exploratory music of the dear departed sculptor Oscar Wiggli [7]. Finally, guitarist Patrice Soletti accepted the challenge of sauntering in real time along the rugged paths of a 30-year-old project [4].

Un cercle hors de l’arbre (A Circle Outside the Tree) was inspired freely by the film La Jetée (1962) by Chris Marker (1921-2012). The piece was realized in September-October 2014 at Studio PANaroma de Música Eletroacústica da Unesp (São Paulo, Brazil) and finalized in 2015 at the composer’s studio.

The veils of ambiguity descend upon a floating cube suspended in the non-place. The cube is filled with a murky grey-brown vapor that rolls, swells, and ripples. This perpetually morphing miasma is in constant motion, like gentle waves seen in stop motion, tiny whitecaps cresting moments before dissipation, only to be reborn elsewhere within the cube. The movements are slow and lethargic, yet mesmerizing as they beckon the bejeweled chalice of imaginal elixir waiting just beyond its vaporous, undulating walls. The entire tableau exudes an aura of chaos while, at the same time, revealing an underlying order whose patterns forever elude intuition.

Go ahead, press play. Become a participant. Dark, strange audal transductions are quite possible, right there, inside that cube. Unknown unknowns. Gobeil’s Un cercle hors de l’arbre is the breadcrumb trail to follow. Many paths lie before you, many trajectories branch in unexpected directions, and many stories await their telling.

Following a bachelor’s degree in compositional techniques, Gilles Gobeil undertook his master’s in composition at Université de Montréal under Serge Garant. In the final years of his studies, he was introduced to electroacoustic practices by Marcelle Deschênes and Francis Dhomont. This discovery stimulated in him a desire to commit entirely to the exploration of unfamiliar forms and original timbres that the mastery of the tools availed by the electroacoustic studio offered. Since the completion of his studies, he has directed his creative interests almost exclusively to the creation of acousmatic and mixed works.

His practice falls within what is known as “cinéma pour l’oreille” (cinema for the ear). Many of his compositions are inspired by literary or cinematic works and seek to “visualize” them through the medium of sound. Although his catalogue is comprised mainly of acousmatic and mixed works, he has also made forays into the fields of dance and film. Oftentimes traces of his experiences with instrumental music can be discerned.

Go ahead, press play.

There’s a peculiar magic in a stroll. It’s not a march, nor a sprint, but a meander — wandering without urgency, where time folds like a map and the scenery becomes the story. Gilles Gobeil’s Promenades captures this unhurried magic, offering seven pieces that aren’t just strolls in the sonic sense but excursions into imagination, memory, and reflection.

A veteran of acousmatic music, Gobeil has long been a master of crafting soundscapes where reality and the abstract coalesce. In Promenades, he draws inspiration from all corners — film, improvisation, and even the quiet poetry of everyday life. The album feels like an intricate scrapbook, with each piece representing a page where sound, narrative, and texture intermingle.

Take the opening track, Un cercle hors de l’arbre, which could be the soundtrack to an imaginary dérive through a forgotten forest, its fixed medium bubbling with subtle tensions. Or Sentinelle, where Yves Charuest’s alto saxophone emerges like a beacon in the vastness of space, tethered to Gobeil’s fixed medium in a haunting dialogue that feels like the auditory equivalent of Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey.

And then there’s Sous l’écorce des pierres — promenade, a tribute to Folkmar Hein, where every sound feels like a step crunching over Berlin’s storied streets. It’s contemplative and cinematic, evoking both the passage of time and the permanence of memory. Meanwhile, Associations libres, the album’s shortest track, delivers a jolt of spontaneous energy as Patrice Soletti’s electric guitar tangles with Gobeil’s fixed medium — a frenetic sprint in an otherwise meditative journey.

The ensemble Déviation(s) shines in Détour, where violin, cello, and guitar weave an intricate tapestry of sound, their improvisational impulses tethered yet free, like a bird circling an open sky. It’s both structured and uncharted, an echo of the ensemble’s name and ethos.

With Dans l’air du soir, Gobeil invites us into Debussy’s dreamscape, where the air shimmers with twilight hues. François Couture’s piano whispers like a distant lullaby, delicate yet grounding. And closing the album is La vie se repose, a tender homage to the late sculptor Oscar Wiggli. Here, Gobeil crafts an auditory meditation on stillness, with textures that feel like they’re breathing — soft, slow, and alive.

What makes Promenades so captivating is Gobeil’s ability to create music that feels both deeply personal and universally resonant. His use of fixed medium doesn’t isolate but rather invites — each piece is an open-ended story where listeners are free to insert their own experiences, memories, and musings.

As a whole, Promenades is less an album and more a collection of sonic essays. It meanders, reflects, and occasionally surprises, but always remains true to its central theme: the art of the stroll. Gilles Gobeil has crafted an album that doesn’t just ask you to listen — it asks you to wander.

… seven pieces that aren’t just strolls in the sonic sense but excursions into imagination, memory, and reflection.

His ’Cinéma pour l’oreille’, which oscillates suggestively between drama and mystery…

Voor Sous l’écorce des pierres — promenade kreeg Gobeil geluiden van Folkmar Heim: He once told me that, after a few hours of strolling, your perception of time gradually becomes altered. I started imagining that the path to that mental state could trigger a reverie hidden under the bark of stones”.

Drese zegt zelf over dit stuk: “The work consists of five sections without breaks: Fournaise, Errance, Chaos, Attente and Danse. The tempo, very slow at theonset — stretched time — gets faster and faster as the piece unfolds. Changes, the other structuring elements, grow closer together. Atfirst, they happen in sync with milestones/pillars, but later they areoperating within one section, giving the impression that time is speeding up… … ”. Met “A mix of heterogenous timbres and materials, changes of states, going from the “fog/cloud,” an environment teeming with tinybeings, through the “cauldron/crawling” environment, toward theplayful, songful “freed breath” environment with its freer spatializedmovements. Moments of “standby” and moments of appeasement alternate with the climaxes of the “scream.” doet ze zonder meer recht aan deze grondlegger van de psychologie.

With this composer [Gilles Gobeil], it leads once again to a beautiful work of sound art. […] Drese’s music fits perfectly within musique concrète…

Release Tipp

Radiohoerer, October 14, 2024

Gilles Gobeil is more of the newer generation. He relies more on effects and moments of surprise. His walks are not for the faint-hearted, but are all the more exciting for that. And under headphones it’s madness, so better turn up the speakers!
