Perhaps it was inevitable that David Turgeon’s mp3 label No Type would make the transition to releasing CDs. After more than 3 years of mp3 publishing (the site was launched late 1998), they present their first compilation 2CD set. The Freest of Radicals presents 36 tracks featuring just as many artists. It features contributions by Le Chien Borgne, themoonstealingproject, Napalm Jazz, V.V., Sluts On Tape, Kalx, n.kra and a host of others, all of whom have been participants on No Type’s online programme at some point or another. With so many contributions, I couldn’t possibly do justice to each one, and the styles certainly vary. From the microsound of Tomas Jirku and Claudia Bonarelli to the abstract digital sculpting of speech.fake, or the post rock sensibilities of Kanovanik and Idmonster, the hyperbeats of Books On Tape, the chaotic distortions of martindx, the IDM-inspired rhythms of Headphone Science… there’s certainly no end to the breadth of styles contained in this release. The challenging and more abstract moments are matched by tracks with more prominent and sometimes even conventional rhythms, beats and even a few melodies thrown if for good measure. Surely, there’s a lot to digest here, almost too much for one release. Almost. Taken as a whole, the compilation sits a little heavily and uneasily with me; with so much to take in, and being thrown in so many different stylistic directions, it lacks some of the focus I would have liked to have seen in such a lengthy compilation. And yet I also have to admit that a number of strong contributions seems to make up for it. Perhaps The Freest of Radicals is better regarded as a “who’s who” of new, not-so-new and/or emerging talents from the No Type roster; a quick thumbnail guide to discovering some new and adventurous music.

La démarche de Francis Dhomont se révèle toujours d’une singularité exceptionnelle. Parfois, au gré d’un concert ou d’une radiodiffusion, on entend une pièce, plus ou moins courte. Le propos en est anecdotique, plus abstrait, souvent interrogateur. C’est toujours bien fait, tellement que parfois on reste sur sa faim. C’est que, fin alchimiste, Dhomont ne révèle ses formules que par bribes à son auditoire. Sa vraie force — il l’a assez souvent prouvé par le passé — se situe au rang de la fresque. Ce Cycle du son le démontre, encore une fois, avec une incroyable maestria. Je passe par-dessus l’analyse descriptive de chacun des mouvements; le compositeur en offre une sur la pochette, généreuse autant que pertinente et brève. Concentrons plutôt notre regard acoustique sur ce dernier chef d’œuvre en date.

Il y a chez Dhomont une sorte de trinité présidant à l’œuvre que la technique transcendée du médium acousmatique met encore plus en évidence dans cette musique de grande maturité. D’abord, il faut parler de la structure de sa musique. Même un néophyte rébarbatif à cette forme d’art peut comprendre ce qui se passe dans l’instant, et en saisir le sens. Du ludique au presque agressif (mais pas trop), de l’inquisitif au réconfortant, de l’identifiable à l’inouï, les moments s’enchainent et s’articulent. On n’en comprend pas toujours le sens ou la nécessité. Alors, la mémoire se met en branle, cette mémoire que Dhomont, à l’instar de Proust, semble tant solliciter pour mieux saisir et inventer le monde.

Nous entrons dans le monde du formel, de la construction. Chacun des instants entendus se met à prendre un relief et en imprime un nouveau sur ce qui s’en vient, ce qui est, ou ce qui encore parfois se répéte. On entend une démonstration du fonctionnement de la perception sonore qui semble ne viser qu’un but: la communication d’une idée. Donc, à la troisième étape, celle qui différencie le véritable artiste du manipulateur de boutons: le domaine indescriptible en mots de l’intuition concrétisée en œuvre musicale. Est-ce satisfaisant? Certes, mais là n’est pas le propos; c’est enrichissant. D’autant plus que ce Cycle du son ne se gêne pas pour citer des classiques du genre (en fait, il s’agit d’une sorte d’hommage posthume à Pierre Schaeffer combiné à une célébration du jubilé du genre d’art qu’il a inventé). Si vous ne les reconnaissez pas, ce n’est pas très grave car les aspérités stylistiques vont vite renseigner l’auditeur attentif sur la direction que prend la musique selon la nature (ou la constitution) du son et le traitement qu’on y applique.

On a donc affaire au résultat des réflexions d’un aussi grand théoricien que technicien — chose rare en ce monde électroacoustique, qu’il transpose tout naturellement dans l’univers des sons, un peu à la manière des visions abstraites beethovéniennes, de certains contrapuntistes de la Renaissance ou des avancées de Webern. L’exploit se hisse tellement haut que l’Idée domine radicalement et poétiquement la quincaillerie mise en branle pour donner naissance à la musique.

Pendant près d’une heure, Dhomont force l’attention. Voici donc l’avantage du disque. Car si on perd sur ses deux haut-parleurs la variété de l’orchestre de diffusion utilisé en salle, vous avez tout loisir, dans cette magnifique réalisation sur deux pistes, de prendre votre meilleur fauteuil et de vous y installer au moment où vous vous sentez le plus disponible à faire le petit effort exigé pour gravir cette montagne magistrale.

Au Cycle du son de Dhomont, on doit répondre par le «cycle de notre écoute». Là, la profondeur d’un univers se déploie galactiquement, rejoignant presque les conceptions astrophysiciennes du monde. Encore une fois, Dhomont réussit le miracle d’éviter le piège de la facilité, nous faisant saisir l’insaisissable qu’il recherche et auquel il touche, nous emmenant avec lui dans ses aspirations.

Humeur de facteur (“The Maker’s Humour”) consists of one large work in six movements. It is Yves Beaupré’s first album and first major work published — at age 47. This harpsichord maker has managed to create, in his spare time so to speak, one of the most touching, enjoyable and rewarding piece of electroacoustic music this reviewer has heard in a few years. One of the main reason why it works so well is probably because Beaupré tapped into his own sound world. Humeur de facteur mainly draws on sounds he hears everyday in his workshop and therefore consists of both a recreation and a fantasy of his quotidian environment. The piece sounds fresh, free of academic rules. The composer does not hesitate to integrate classic musique concrète techniques (pitch shifts, cut-and-paste, analog filtering, etc.) with computer music, even some electronica flavors. The latter never sound gratuitous, they simply naturally fit the man’s vision. The Prélude démesuré (“Enormous Prelude”) briefly exposes some of the basic material, drawing the listener into his world with a grip that won’t let go for the better part of an hour. La Beauséjour, the best movement, opens with a short harpsichord figure, the only snippet of the completed instrument on the whole record, and launches in a highly suggestive daydream of the maker’s labor of love. The Péroraison closes the piece with an unexpected turn to electronics, ending more like a Pan Sonic track than anything empreintes DIGITALes had previously released. The music follows a path similar to the music of Robert Normandeau and Francis Dhomont, playing with narratives and the unconscious. This beautiful surprise is highly recommended.

Released in November 2001, Impulsion regroups all of Micheline Coulombe Saint-Marcoux’s known, available tape works (two could not be found in the composer’s archives). Many appear on record here for the first time, 16 years after her death. Of the five works, four were composed between 1970 and 1972. Constellation I dates from 1981. The pieces are presented in chronological order. The music of Coulombe Saint-Marcoux stands the test of time. One could expect a feminine or even feminist touch, but on the contrary her works sound very close to those of her male colleagues, especially Pierre Schaeffer (in her early works) and Iannis Xenakis (his tape music, of course). Arksalalartôq (1970-1971) is an interesting study on language on poems by Noël Audet and Gilles Marsolais put through a series of permutations and transformations, but her cut-and-paste technique is somewhat clumsy or maybe just naive (not unlike Schaeffer’s, actually). The best piece is Moustières. A suite of short events, tableaux inspired by the landscape of the French Alps, it sounds fresh, each segment developing an idea with acute precision, the listener having only to piece the puzzle together. Constellation I, by far the longest work at 19 minutes, dives into more abstract music, ample gestures like splashes of colors on the canvas. It lacks a clear aim. By itself, Coulombe Saint-Marcoux’s music is not essential electroacoustics, but anyone interested in the place of women in this male-dominated field (even more so in the 1970s) will definitely want to hear Impulsion.

In the tradition of soundeffect music, here are some recordings by artists who use sound as material to be sculpted. In Jean-Pierre Gauthier’s recording, Machines consentantes and Hachures (1999/2000), we hear the sound of mech” anized drums, automated flutes and decoys, vibrating garage sheet metal and quite audible radio interference. This sculptor of homemade instruments occasionally works in tandem with Mirko Sabatini. The Italian drummer plays solo on his CD titled MK. Orchestrin, the fruit of Sabatini’s lengthy research on sound and the workings of his instrument. Michel Tétreault is another sound artist often present in the visual art milieu. One of his many recordings was produced with Japanese artist Yoshihide Otomo. In 21 situations (AM 069), they manipulated turnta” bles in a different way than DJs, creating unusual sounds. Lastly, Jocelyn Robert gives us a genuine sound performance with his recording 20 moments blancs lents created for the twentieth anniversary of Chambre blanche in Quebec City. Here the artist attempts to translate the gallery’s time into sound.

L’auditeur éventuel ne s’attend bien sûr pas à une compilation des meilleurs tangos. Peut-être et plus sûrement pense-t-il à un détournement de cette musique? Ou alors à une vision sonore de la déconfiture argentine, un peu premonitoire, certes?

En fait, il n’y a pas réellement de rapport avec le tango. Ou alors de manière très fortuite, si le récepteur de radio accroche dans sa recherche un émetteur branché sur ce langage musical.

Le Tango de Martin Meilleur est en effet un montage sonore réalisé à partir de sons bruts captés sur les fréquences en ondes courtes, au moyen de divers récepteurs. Ces captations ne sont pas retraitées — le lecteur se rappelle peut-être Devil’s music de Nicolas Collins retraitant, lui, la matière sonore captée — mais collées, juxtaposées, quelquefois amplifiées. Le résultat en est un enorme patchwork radiophonique mondial: l’auditeur passe d’une émission culinaire ou d’un bout de musique à une radiodiffusion d’un spectacle ou à une retransmission d’informations diverses, intégrant tous les sons parasites, naturels (genre perturbation météorologique) ou inherents à la qualité du récepteur. La mondialisation à domicile, en somme.
