  • Zoo in SOCAN — Words and Music

Another disc from the same label is devoted to music by Torontonian Dan Lander, who generally works with prerecorded text rather than tones. Of the four pieces, the most fascinating is Talking to a Loudspeaker, a 24-minute, often humorous collage of House of Commons discussions, weather reports, radio announcements and even broadcast “dead air”…

Délirantes in SOCAN — Words and Music

Délirantes (empreintes DIGITALes), is a two-disc set of music by Vancouver’s Sergio Barroso, with the composer playing digital keyboards in four of the nine works. Barroso was born in Havana and draws on his Cuban heritage to create some distinctive music, by turns dramatic (La Fiesta), moody (En Febrero Mueren Las Flores, for violin and tape) and somewhat minimalist (Tablao, an homage to flamenco guitar music)…

    empreintes DIGITALes in Earwaves

empreintes DIGITALes, the superb Canadian-based label, has released more outstanding computer and electronic music. Jon Appleton’s Contes de la mémoire is a compilation of works from one of electronic music pioneer’s of the 1960s. Robert Normandeau Tangram finds the Montréal composer’s work dense and abstract, much like a Chinese puzzle in hyper-space. German-born Hildegard Westerkamp’s Transformations is an environmental musique, concrete-inspired CD that is magnificent in its treatment of natural sounds transformed into musical statement. Her use of a slowed-down sound of a raven in Beneath the Forest Floor, turning it into a rhythm instnument, is brilliant and haunting.

… outstanding computer and electronic music.

Contes de la mémoire in Village Voice

The guru of the synclavier has released a couple of new works, but mostly old pieces that hadn’t been available in decades. Appleton’s pieces stand apart from electro musics’s technology-driven history, often with refreshing, purposeful naïveté. In 1969 he made a piece called Newark Airport Rock by recording the answers of passing strangers to his question, “What do you think about the new electronic music?” That’s here with its 1996 sequel, in wich the best answer is “I don’t know what your talking about, I’ve just come from England.” The early works using ethnic music and environmental sounds seem timely in today’s sampler-driven scene, and I like the dreamy simplicity of the synthetised In Medias Res. Naturally, the disc ends with the once famous Chef d’œuvre of 1967, based on a Chef Boy-ar-dee TV commercial.

    Forêt profonde in Voir

“Le disque de la semaine”, Dominique Olivier, Voir, April 3, 1997
    Thursday, April 3, 1997 Press
