Contemplations

Emma Margetson

… I like her understated outlook on the world. The Sound Projector, UK

Twenty-four favourites… The Moderns

Nine works composed over the past decade charting a prolonged engagement with the medium of sound. The passing of time remains an important focus within the album. Throughout, sound stands on the edge of the abyss of being; it is evanescent, a temporal fading that passings just as it arrives.

About Contemplations

Contemplations is an album of introspection and reflection, and gestures towards new perspectives. The included works have been composed over the course of the past decade, and charts a prolonged engagement with the medium of sound (from objects to places, feelings to experiences).

The passing of time remains an important focus within the album. Throughout, sound stands on the edge of the abyss of being; it is evanescent, a temporal fading that passes just as it arrives. Tick (2015) and Elapsing (2021-22) bookend the compositions, articulating the evolution of my compositional thinking throughout this period, with its disjunct levels of contemplative reflection.

Our Perception of Chaos

Ed Pinsent, The Sound Projector, December 10, 2025

Contemplations is a survey of electro-acoustic compositions by Emma Margetson from Derby (UK), dating from 2015 to 2022. Mostly she used very simple means — close-miked objects, concentrating on one subject per composition, no especially radical changes and no foregone conclusions about what the work “means”. By the time of 2019’s Sketching Froanna she attempts an ambitious eight-channel composition, responding to the lines and shapes of an artwork by Wyndham Lewis. If there’s an underlying theme to Margetson’s observations, it’s about introspection and reflection, linked to the passing of time. Some pieces might be prosaic and descriptive, but I like her understated outlook on the world.

… I like her understated outlook on the world.

Kritiek

Ben Taffijn, Nieuwe Noten, November 26, 2024

Reeds in Tick, “a piece made of sounds of a ticking metronome. Shifting, splintering, and refracting via the temporal and spatial domain” horen we dat mooi terug. Bij Distorted Illusions schrijft de componiste: “The sensations of falling, walking, moving vehicles, flowing water… what does this symbolise in our dreams? What images and thoughtsdoes this evoke as we meander through the conscious-unconsciousstates of our minds? Awake? Or still dreaming?”

The darkness just won’t go away, not even in this piece [Deir Yassin mon amour], which Bassal also beautifully weaves Arabic music through. […] Finally, I will mention here the wonderful sound artwork Sketching Froanna [from Emma Margetson], a piece that, since it is for eight channels, you really should hear live.

Review

Alan Freeman, Audion, no. 79, September 1, 2024

A wide-ranging electroacoustic performance artist, Emma hails from Derby (England) but studied her art in Birmingham, and has since worked at many other places.

As with fellow empreintes DIGITALes artist Ingrid Drese, this would seem to be Emma’s solo album debut, but unlike Ingrid’s long-form minutes, all of which are of a quite dynamic and sometimes startling nature, mixing up the obvious and the vastly manipulated. Thus she’s Leicester’s Louise Rossiter in her approach.

There’s certainly a lot to take-in when listening to works as dramatically crafted as these, which of course makes it engaging and well worth repeated listening.

… engaging and well worth repeated listening.

Bei Isochrone mischen sich Geräusche eines Fahrrads mit dem Verkehr im Hamburger Elbtunnel und Poesie des Instagram-Poeten Atticus: Life is a tunnel / not a cave / keep walking / and you will find again / the light / you left behind.

With Contemplations, she, who now teaches sound design […], reflects on the evolution of her sound art […], with an emphasis on the sound of stuff in space and time.

Absolut atemberaubend!

Absolutely breathtaking!
