Nothing but epics here. Remember those Yes albums with the Roger Dean gatefold covers? Well, Topographic Oceans just got mapped. Relayer got real. Close to the Edge becomes the fall it only hinted at when your sixteen-year-old self first opened that cover. Dean would have a field day with this. Time holds in suspension and the Word is BE! Meer van Empreites DIGITALes vandaag. Promenades van Gilles Gobeil en Lointain intérieur van Ingrid Drese. Gobeil, een Canadese componist kwam aan het eind van zijn master in aanraking met elektronische muziek, via Marcelle Deschênes em Francis Dhomont. Dat pakte hem en in zijn werk, bijvoorbeeld in de stukken die hij op dit Promenades verzamelde gaat hij met name op zoek naar onbekende klankwerelden. Drese komt uit België en studeerde bij één van de belangrijkste componisten in dit genre die ook hier al eens voorbij kwam: Annette Vande Gorne en volgde masterclasses bij gezaghebbende componisten als François Bayle, Francis Dhomont, Leo Kupper, Jean-Claude Risset, Bernard Parmegiani, Michel Chion en Robert Normandeau.

In het uit 2014-15 stammende Un cercle hors de l’arbre laat Gobeil direct horen hoe je spanning en zelfs een zekere mate van onrust in klank vat. Een heftige onweersbui, zo klinkt het begin van dit stuk. Verderop horen we duistere nevels, klokken, onverwachte klankinterrupties, het lijkt wel een soundtrack voor een thriller. Een bijzonder interessante compositie die terecht meerdere keren in de prijzen viel. Gobeil is één van de weinige componisten op dit label dat niet alleen acousmatische composities maakt, maar ook elektro-akoestische. Zo horen we in Sentinelle Yves Charuest met een uiterst experimentele improvisatie op altsax over een steeds verder aanzwellende klanknevel, de saxofoon langzaam wegdrukkend. Verderop horen we hem echter al kwetterend weer zijn onstuimige intrede doen. Voor Sous l’écorce des pierres — promenade kreeg Gobeil geluiden van Folkmar Heim: He once told me that, after a few hours of strolling, your perception of time gradually becomes altered. I started imagining that the path to that mental state could trigger a reverie hidden under the bark of stones”. Het leidt bij deze componist andermaal tot een prachtig geluidskunstwerk. Het vrij korte Associations libres schreef Gobeil met gitarist René Lussier in gedachten. Op dit album horen we echter Patrice Soletti. Ook hier klinkt het allemaal uiterst disruptief. Bijzonder is ook Détour waarvoor Gobeil naast elektronische geluiden ook eerder gemaakte opnames van gitaar, viool en cello gebuikte.

Op Lointain intérieur staan vier vrij lange stukken, allemaal volledig voor elektronica. En meer nog dan Gobeil past de muziek van Drese uitstekend binnen de musique concrète, iets dat ze overigens gemeen heeft met Vande Gorne. We vangen aan met Pérégrinations d’une petite sphère happée par le temps uit 2020, waarin we verrast worden op een zeer gevarieerde, spannende klankwereld vol onverwachte geluiden. Treize virgule huit voor acht kanalen, een stuk dat je dus eigenlijk live moet horen, is met ruim drieëntwintig minuten het langste stuk van dit album. Drese zegt zelf over dit stuk: “The work consists of five sections without breaks: Fournaise, Errance, Chaos, Attente and Danse. The tempo, very slow at theonset — stretched time — gets faster and faster as the piece unfolds. Changes, the other structuring elements, grow closer together. Atfirst, they happen in sync with milestones/pillars, but later they areoperating within one section, giving the impression that time is speeding up… … ”. Alle stukken op dit album zijn opgedragen aan iemand die voor de ontwikkeling van Drese van belang was. Au-delà des mille rayons, geïnspireerd door het gedicht Der Panther van Rainer Maria Rilke, aan Vande Gorne. Wederom een bijzonder boeiende compositie. Als laatste stuk klinkt Cri de Merlin, inspiratie haalde Drese bij Carl Gustav Jung. Met “A mix of heterogenous timbres and materials, changes of states, going from the “fog/cloud,” an environment teeming with tinybeings, through the “cauldron/crawling” environment, toward theplayful, songful “freed breath” environment with its freer spatializedmovements. Moments of “standby” and moments of appeasement alternate with the climaxes of the “scream.” doet ze zonder meer recht aan deze grondlegger van de psychologie.

A Belgian electroacoustic composer, rooted in more conventional forms (she was trained as a pianist) with quite a career behind her and, excepting a couple of tracks on various artists collections, here debuting with her first solo electroacoustic album. The four lengthy works presented here all feature use of sounds that have been totally mutated beyond their source recordings, being layered, twisted, multi-layered and/or folded over themselves, along with some recognisable sounds occasionally showing through — some traffic, breathy vocal expressions, aquatic, metallic, environmental and subterranean type sonics as well. Elements of Luc Ferrari and Michel Redolfi come to mind, yet it’s clearly a different and original mind at work here.

Con una preparazione da pianista classica alle spalle, Ingrid Drese ha sviluppato un interesse crescente per la musica elettroacustica sul finire degli anni novanta, quando ha iniziato a frequentare i corsi di composizione al conservatorio di Bruxelles. Questo suo lavoro Lointain intérieur si basa su un intreccio di visioni poetiche e ricerche scientifiche, spaziando dalle allucinazioni dello scrittore, poeta e pittore belga Henri Michaux in Pérégrinations d’une petite sphère happée par le temps all’affresco uditivo suddiviso in cinque sezioni Treize virgule huit, concepito per otto altoparlanti e basato sulla trasposizione delle onde elettromagnetiche in onde acustiche; dalla poesia di Rainer Maria Rilke che in Au-delà des Mille Rayons diviene sinonimo di rotazione e circolarità, al finale di Cri de Merlin ispirato all’opera di Carl Gustav Jung. Un’esperienza percettiva complessa, sviluppata attraverso un articolata fusione di suoni e significati.

From reading the liner notes that Belgian electroacoustic composer Ingrid Drese wrote for the four works on this new album, it’s clear that she creates abstract movies with sound, most derived in some way from poetic sources. The collection opens with Pérégrinations d’une petite sphère happée par le temps, a 2020 piece inspired by Henri Michaux’s poem Afterwards, which Drese translates as “an entanglement of voices, of pathways. A cloth of musical motifs enlightened by a trumpet-like sound, the spark of which, in time, fades to hide within the me.” Each of these dynamic works can trigger all sorts of images and synaesthetic visions, as our imaginations supply phantasmagorias for each work, as abstract sounds and shapes billow, drift, and collide. The composer doesn’t try to obfuscate her methods. She notes the number of loudspeakers and technical parameters she employed for the piece Treize virgule huit. The title touches on the age of the universe (“thirteen point eight” billion years) and the music reads like a truncated soundtrack for that epic history. It’s amorphous enough that a listener can easily fabricate their own narrative according to these richly textured, shape-shifting swirls, eddies, explosions, and percolations.
