Reconnu pour ses fructueuses collaborations avec la chorégraphe Marie Chouinard — il est encore présent sur sa nouvelle création, Orphée et Eurydice — et pour sa musique électroacoustique très expressionniste — la pièce Décap et sa référence à la guerre du Kosovo —, le compositeur Louis Dufort propose avec Matériaux composés un réassemblage de quelques-unes des ses pièces acousmatiques les plus récentes. Fidèle à une ligne de conduite abrupte et figurative — Grains de sable, référence cathartique au tsunami asiatique, ou Enfant d’obus —, il s’offre de surcroît un hommage particulier à Francis Dhomont, dont il [échantillonne] des extraits [de la pièce] Novars [pour] Gen_3.

Robert Normandeau has been invited as an international keynote speaker for the ACMC on July 10-12, 2008 in Sydney (Australia). This year’s conference theme ‘Sound:Space’ aims to encourage discussion of contemporary issues including: performance of electroacoustic music, music and the Internet, Surround sound in recording, composition and performance.

So far the name Nicolas Bernier popped when doing collaborations with other people, so Les arbes may be his first solo release. The title means the trees and, well, ok, its also a collaboration, even when only through the visual side, with Urban9. A set of card by him is part of the package. So far, also, we thought of Bernier as a laptop musician, but for this release he has expanded his methods of musical expression to using piano, vibraphone, guitar and even brass instruments. Other than his previous works too this seems to be less a work of improvisation and more a work of thorough composition. This is where digital music and acoustic music meet and melt. Glitchy rhythms, sounds of crackle, but also warm guitar parts, brass section and sustained strings. Not right from the start and not all the way clear, but as things move along, you could almost as suddenly find yourself inside a modern classical piece of music, in // Piano or // Spleen, with flutes, crescendo violins and piano. This is quite an amazing CD, with great ideas, perfect execution, nice packaging and a way out of the locked in microsound artists. Bernier plays microsound, mixes it with real instruments and comes up with something new.

The French magazine Revue & corrigée (#76, June 2008) has published an impelling article Pourquoi faites-vous des disques? (“Why do you make CDs?”). Jérôme Noetinger, remembering the 1987 Libération special issue asking “Why do you make films?” and the answer by Jean-Luc Godard (“I make movies to avoid the why question”), has decided to ask “the why question” to about 40 artists and producers, amongst whom: Jean-François Denis, Bertrand Denzler, Bernard Fort, Lionel Marchetti, Martin Tétreault, Carole Rieussec, Joëlle Léandre…

Trois songes mis en sons par un expert de la discipline acousmatique, voilà qui a de quoi éveiller au plus haut point notre soif d’étrangetés oniriques. Sur cet enregistrement, Gilles Gobeil puise son inspiration au cœur de sa culture littéraire et cinématographique. L’espace de trois titres, le québécois traverse, esquisse ou symbolise le monde poétique de certains de ses écrivains ou réalisateurs fétiches (se référant notamment à certaines scènes d’un film de Tarkovsky resté à l’état de scénario). Entre angoisse et fascination, de belles images sonores parcourent cette œuvre conçue pour tester et régénérer notre acuité «radiovisuelle».
