From reading the liner notes that Belgian electroacoustic composer Ingrid Drese wrote for the four works on this new album, it’s clear that she creates abstract movies with sound, most derived in some way from poetic sources. The collection opens with Pérégrinations d’une petite sphère happée par le temps, a 2020 piece inspired by Henri Michaux’s poem Afterwards, which Drese translates as “an entanglement of voices, of pathways. A cloth of musical motifs enlightened by a trumpet-like sound, the spark of which, in time, fades to hide within the me.” Each of these dynamic works can trigger all sorts of images and synaesthetic visions, as our imaginations supply phantasmagorias for each work, as abstract sounds and shapes billow, drift, and collide. The composer doesn’t try to obfuscate her methods. She notes the number of loudspeakers and technical parameters she employed for the piece Treize virgule huit. The title touches on the age of the universe (“thirteen point eight” billion years) and the music reads like a truncated soundtrack for that epic history. It’s amorphous enough that a listener can easily fabricate their own narrative according to these richly textured, shape-shifting swirls, eddies, explosions, and percolations.

“Daddy, did you notice any sort of… sound when you were down there?” asks a little girl at the beginning of Hidden Spaces. It seems that all John Young does is notice sound, and in the most unexpected places. The aforementioned track combines field recordings from Lake Åsunden in Sweden, an escalator in Montréal, and a pig sty in Dobbiaco, Italy. Arioso is based around recordings of crickets and pedestrian crossing signals in Oberlin, Ohio, while Sweet Anticipation captures street preachers in New York City. It doesn’t matter so much where Young finds his sounds, though, as he builds alien digital worlds around them anyway. Identifiable sources are quick to fade away into an electronic tableau only to suddenly reappear, creating an engrossing tension between the familiar and the strange.

Die mehrfach ausgezeichnete akusmatische Komponistin und Klangkünstlerin eröffnet uns mit ihren mehrkanaligen Kompositionen auf beeindruckende Weise neue Hörräume.

Emma Margetson ist eine akusmatische Komponistin und Klangkünstlerin, die zwischen London und Birmingham (England, UK) lebt und arbeitet. Ihr Schaffen umfasst akusmatische Komposition, Klangkunst, akusmatische Performance-Interpretation und gelegentlich auch Live-Improvisation elektronischer Musik. Zu ihren Forschungsinteressen gehören Klangverbreitung und Verräumlichung, ortsspezifische Arbeiten, Klangspaziergänge und Installationen, Publikumsentwicklung und — einbindung sowie Community-Musik.

Ihre Musik wurde in Konzerten und Festivals international anerkannt und aufgeführt und erhielt eine besondere Erwähnung im Biennalen Akusmatischen Kompositionswettbewerb Métamorphoses (Belgien, 2020), den Excellence in Sound Art & Sound Design Preis im Rahmen des klingt gut! Young Artist Award (Deutschland, 2018) und einen ersten Preis ex æquo in der Space of Sound Spatialization Performance Competition (Belgien, 2019). Sie hat eine Reihe von Aufträgen und Kooperationen erhalten, unter anderem vom Royal Observatory (Royal Museums Greenwich), The Barber Institute of Fine Arts und der Ikon Gallery. Emma Margetson ist Dozentin für Musik und Klang und Programmleiterin des Studiengangs Master of Arts Music and Sound Design an der University of Greenwich (England, UK). Außerdem ist sie Co-Direktorin der Konzertreihe des Loudspeaker Orchestra. Ihre Arbeit ist bei verschiedenen Plattenfirmen erhältlich, darunter empreintes DIGITALes, Obs, Sonos Localia und Urban Arts Berlin.

Schon lange nicht mehr hat mich eine Komponistin so in ihren Bann gezogen. Es ist verblüffend und aufregend, ihre Klänge zu hören… „… es klingt, als würde man Metall zum Atmen bringen“, so beschreibt es ein Zuhörer. Das in Montréal ansässige Elektroakustik — und Akusmatik — Label empreintes DIGITALes bringt in den nächsten Tagen zwei neue Alben des aus Neuseeland stammenden und heute in Großbritannien lebenden Komponisten John Young heraus.

Espaces lointains, das dritte Album des Künstlers, das als erstes der vorliegenden Releases produziert wurde, und dessen Nachfolger Histoires de soldats zählen beide zur Gattung elektroakustischer Dokumentationen, während ersteres den akustischen Abdrücken des Verschwundenen nachspüren, basieret das andere Album zum Teil auf den Erinnerungen von Youngs Vater an dessen Einsatz im zweiten Weltkrieg, einer der Tracks trägt den Titel Once He Was a Gunner. Die Alben erscheinen beide am 28. Februar auf CD.
