I had the idea Robert Normandeau, famed Montréal electroacoustic composer, was a regular name in these pages, but in fact we haven’t noted a release from him since 2001’s Claire de terre, his ambitious inter-galactic composition that drunk in the beauties of images of the earth seen from outer space. Before that there was the 1999 release Figures, with its memorable opening track Le renard et la rose composed of multiple layers of people laughing (to quite nightmarish effect) and the 19-minute Venture, which used samples from Normandeau’s prog-rock LP collection. Normandeau is a significant composer and establishment figure of many years standing, for instance he helped found the Canadian Electroacoustic Community in 1987.

His Dômes (empreintes DIGITALes IMED 14128) is a compilation / survey of five recent-ish works, not really connected with each other. La part des anges offers an ethereal and complex digital drone. It’s supposed to illustrate the way that alcohol evaporates through the walls of a barrel, or may be partially inspired by that fermentation process. In like manner, the composer tries to extract the essence of goodness from the choral material he is sampling and assembling here. Delicate, serene, unearthly in places; the listener may sip this aural brandy with some pleasure.

His Kuppel is more earth-bound. Mundane, even. On one level, it’s an assemblage of field recordings, not unlike the sort of thing we hear in abundance from the German label Dekorder. Normandeau spent two months in Karlsruhe and recorded the trams, the church bell chiming on the Markplatz, and a squeaky door near the studio where he was working. There isn’t much radical sound-transformation going here on that I can detect, but the finished work was intended to be broadcast through the PA system of the art gallery ZKM_Kubus in Karlsruhe, thus cementing its status as a site-specific installation.

Pluies noires from 2008 (reworked in 2014) has a darker theme. Normandeau composed incidental stage music for Sarah Kane’s play Blasted, which uses rain in the story to create dramatic pauses. Since the play contains references to the Bosnian conflict, Normandeau sees fit to ponder on “the darkness of the human soul”. Movie fans may recall the memorable lines in Taxi Driver “Some day a real rain will come and wash all the scum off the streets,” although from the dreary music on offer here it’s clear Normandeau intends something less direct and more metaphysical with these grim drones, which might be composed from brass instrument samples. A good effort to capture internal mental turmoil in sound.

Le renard et la rose noted above is reprised to some degree on 2012’s Baobabs; it’s described here as an “adaptation” of that original acousmatic piece from 1995. Four lively voices, clattering percussion and tape effects combine in sprightly fashion to realise the most engaging cut on this collection. Normandeau’s use of the voice appears, again, to be strictly abstract and non-verbal, but he’s interested in a deeper level of vocal communication where “human language sound corresponds directly to the object”. Layered inside these 13 and one-half minutes is a further composition inspired by Saint-Exupery’s The Little Prince, which was commissioned by Radio Canada. This is enjoyable, if in places a rather old-school piece of composition; it could easily have been realised in the late 1960s by Berio or Ligeti.

… I’ve been catching up with some of Empreintes DIGITALes’s output from late 2014 and want to flag up a couple of highly impressive discs. The renowned Canadian electroacoustic composer Robert Normandeau‘s latest offering is Dômes, featuring five pieces either revised or completed in the last three years. As in all his work, the interaction between familiar sound sources and their more abstract treatment is fascinating. Kuppel uses the bells of a church in Karlsruhe as an omnipresent pulse, pitch centre and point of perspective. Normandeau layers the noises of trams and a squealing door over these bells such that a strange kind of veracity appears, simultaneously life-like yet obviously artificial. Baobabs is the most obtuse piece on the disc, a 15-minute surreal stream of consciousness for four voices, six percussion and tape that persistently keeps one at a distance. Thankfully, it’s the exception to the rule. Hamlet-Machine without Actors and Pluies noires engage with theatrical drama; the latter piece, with the Bosnian conflict in mind, is a disconcerting aerated dronescape peppered with heavy dull impacts that seem to squash and leave dazed every other sound. They become reduced to extended whispers and gargles, occasionally marshalling themselves sufficiently to form potent but short-lived eruptions; a sense of struggle is palpable. The former piece also employs a drone at its centre, a beautiful, radiant core beneath shifting metallic/industrial strata. A work about “the oppression of man by society”, perhaps Normandeau locates humanity within this luminous core, in which case its persistence makes this a positive statement. La part des anges is the album’s highlight, though, an opulent, shining piece of pure sonic ecstasy, full of rich clouds of complex tonalities and the evocation of a myriad celestial voices.

Two years after the excellent Palimpsestes, empreintes DIGITALes offers another interesting collection of outputs for domes of directional loudspeakers, which can render the illusion of multidimensional sounds by means of stereophonic systems, by Prof Normandeau to more demanding followers of electroacoustic music. It includes five long impressive pieces that can reasonably be considered monumental as the composer acts as a sort of architect who erects sonic cathedrals: the opening La part des anges (2011, 12) sounds like a glimpse and an exploration inside a seraphic dimension, where hiccups of electricity, hazy steams and piercing frequencies are the set for angelic choirs, even if the slow sonic evaporation as well as the title refers to so-called “angels’ share,” the volatile part of aging alcohol that slowly evaporates through the walls of barrels; the resounding chiming bells on the following Kuppel (2005-06, 14) comes from the bells he recorded in the Markplaz in Karlsruhe (Germany) and the combination of its hypnotical tolls with other two recordings — the noises of urban tramways and the ones coming from a squeaking door close to the studio where he was working at the Zentrum fur Kunst und Medientechnologie Karlsruhe — could let you think that Robert managed to grab the breathe of that German city. The interactions of breathe, saxophone and sinister dins, that suddenly explodes in electrical storms which manage to emphasize the sense of tragedy, on the catchy Pluies noires (meaning “Obscure Rains”) got inspired by the theatre play Blasted by Sarah Kane, for which Robert composed the music ina stage direction by Brigitte Haentjens in 2008: such an ominous title refers to the pauses in the play that he rendered by means of the four seasonal stormy “explosions” (spring rain, summer rain, fall rain and winter rain) while having the tragic events that occurred in Bosnia in his own mind, so that he didn’t focus on the typical idea of abstract purification related to rain, but rather to the fact that “all these rains can hardly wash the darkness of the human soul at war.” The most recent piece of this collection, Hamlet-Machine without Actors (2014) is another composition he made for a stage by Brigitte Haentjens of the play Hamletmachine (1979) by Heiner Müller: the track, a shorter version of the original score which lasted one hour and fifteen minutes that got inspired by another work by Normandeau (Hamlet-Machine with Actors, which, as you can easily guess, incorporated the voices and the sounds of the actors of the play!), succeeds in describing the main theme of the play, that is “the oppression of man by the society, the representation of taboos — including sexual ones — through the show and the end of art.” The final Baobabs (2012-13) is mainly base on human voices: even if I’m not a fan of this kind of art, the adaptation of the acousmatic piece Le renard et la rose (1995), consisting of five movements (Babbling and rhythm; Nostalgia and timber; Anger and dynamic; Lassitude and space; Serenity and texture) by Prof Normandeau deserves to be listened.

Der 1955 in Québec geborene Robert Normandeau ist zusammen mit dem um ein Jahr älteren Gilles Gobeil und dem um ein Jahr jüngeren Paul Dolden ein Hauptvertreter der in der Communauté électroacoustique canadienne (CÉC) organisierten Elektroakustik, dessen Kreationen kontinuierlich bei empreintes DIGITALes verfolgt werden können. Dômes (IMED 14128) präsentiert fünf Arbeiten aus den letzten zehn Jahren, wobei La part des anges (2011, 12) gleich mal mit einem hintersinnigen Titel aufwartet. Anteil der Engel nennt man nämlich das Phä­nomen, dass sich von alkoholischen Flüssigkeiten, die in Holzfässern gelagert werden, ein gewisser Teil verflüchtig. Normandeau fängt von altem A-capella-Ge­sang quasi dessen flüchtige Dünste ein. Ich spreche öfters mal von Phantom­chö­ren, was hier so klingt, als würden Englein singen, ist diesmal nicht halluzi­niert. Kuppel (2005-06, 14) gehört zu Normandeaus Zyklus ‘Immersive Music’ und ba­siert auf Souveniers aus Karlsruhe, wo er 2005 am ZKM gearbeitet hat. Er hatte dabei den Klangdom im ZKM_Kubus im Sinn und die Vorstellung, sich bei den Karlsruhern zu bedanken durch die Möglichkeit, unter den 43 Meyersound-Laut­sprechern ihre Stadt mal ganz anders zu erleben. Mit dem Seufzen einer Tür, Glockendingdong und Straßenbahngeräuschen, die der Kanadier vor ihren Haustüren eingesammelt hatte. In Pluies noires (2008, 14), seiner Musik zu Zerbombt (Blasted), Sarah Kanes brutalem Theaterdebut, kann selbst der Regen aller vier Jahreszeiten nicht die Greuel abwaschen, die Kane dem Publikum ins Hirn scheißt. Ein Baritonsaxophon versucht röchelnd und furzend, ihre düstere Direktheit zu evozieren. In Hamlet-Machine without Actors (2014) hat Normandeau seine Musik zu Heiner Müllers blutiger Schädelspalterei vom Sein oder Nichtsein von Marx’ Gespenstern kondensiert auf 9 impulsiv dröhnende und scheppernde, archaisch von einem Didgeridoo durchpulste Minuten. Baobabs (2014) schließlich inszeniert sich selber mit vierfacher Vokalisation und sechs­facher Percussion als nahezu volkstümlich rhythmisiertes Kecak und Tamtam, dessen Motive von den Affenbrotbäumen bis zur Schwanzspitze des Fuchses La Petit Prince entstammen. Merke: Man hört nur mit dem Herzen gut.

[…] Weitaus mehr beglückt der Kanadier Robert Normandeau mit Dômes. Normandeau, Professor für Elektroakustik in Montréal und für seine Musik dutzendfach preisgekrönt, schlägt hier einen variantenreichen Bogen zwischen Elektroakustik und moderner Klassik. La part des anges etwa ist ein elektroakustisch gerahmter Engelsgesang, den man als schickes Ambient-Update von György Ligetis Lux Aeterna verbuchen könnte. Kuppel wiederum verquickt Karlsruher Glockenklänge mit Straßen (bahn) geräuschen und elektrosphärischem Geknister zu einer streckenweise minimalistisch anmutenden Ouvertüre. Pluies noires ist die Bühnenmusik zu einem Stück der großartigen Sarah Kane, ein düsteres Exspirationsgewaber mit impliziten Anspielungen auf den Bosnienkrieg. Der größte Ohrenöffner ist aber wohl das letzte Stück auf der CD, Baobabs, eine fünfteilige onomato- poetische Suite für vier Stimmen und sechs Perkussionsinstrumente, die den perfekten Soundtrack für eine Kurzgeschichte à la James Tiptree jr. abgeben würden, in der ein Erkundungsschiff der galaktischen Föderation eine Handvoll Eingeborener einsammelt, doch kurz vor Beitegeuze in Interferenzen gerät. Während der Bordfunker den Äther nach Funksignalen absucht, stimmen die Eingeborenen ein ekstatisches Lamento an…

Non saprei se definire questo disco, un vero e proprio album, oppure una raccolta di pezzi. Il concept che li lega, fa dell’opera Dômes un album; il fatto che poi ogni pezzo abbia vita propria, mette ai margini l’idea di inclusione all’interno di un progetto più grande. Formalmente, i brani (ai cui titoli segue la data di realizzazione) sono documentazioni, testimonianze di luoghi, situazioni che, astraendosi, si trasformano in scenari avulsi dal contesto d’origine. Robert Normandeau idea questo disco come uno sguardo che procede verso l’alto, per poi ripiombare in una realtà che, dopo l’ascensione, non sembra aver molto a che fare con quello che ci ricordavamo. Esce per l’etichetta acusmatica empreintes DIGITALes.

Dômes: cinque pezzi (non facili) di differente produzione, in luoghi lontani e per scopi diversi.

La part des anges (2011, 12) esplora la dispersione, la frammentazione, l’estrazione e la distillazione. Come nelle distillerie che si parla di parte degli angeli (la parte volatile durante l’invecchiamento dell’alcool che evapora fuori dalle pareti del barile, così i suoni, registrati su multitraccia da nastro, evaporano e si dissolvono lentamente, assistendo ad una continua sottrazione verso l’essenza. Kuppel (2005-6, 14), lavoro commissionato dalla ZKM, include tre registrazioni a Karlsruhe a Berlino durante un soggiorno autunnale di due mesi. Lavoro ideato per una cupola di altoparlanti all’interno della ZKM_Kubus. Pluies noires (2008, 14) è un brano ideato per lo spettacolo teatrale di Sarah Kane (Blasted) in cui sono registrati quattro tipi di pioggia (quella autunnale, invernale, primaverile ed estiva. Normandeau sembra definire “inutile” questa sua pratica, poiche “tutte queste piogge difficilmente riescono a lavare via l’oscurità dell’animo umano durante la guerra”. Probabilmente uno dei pezzi più inquietanti e abissali del disco. Hamlet-Machine without Actors (2014) è semplicemente “onnipresenza” musicale, ideato per uno spettacolo teatrale a Montreal che prevedeva un’ora e un quarto di musica dal titolo Hamlet-Machine with Actors. Ha integrato la traccia di suoni elettronici, inserendoci anche la voce degli attori sul palco e riducendola a 8′ e 54”: una rappresentazione di tabù. Baobabs (2012-13) per voci, sei percussioni e nastro, pezzo onomatopeico di cinque movimenti e con un’inedita composizione come adattamento a Il Piccolo Principe.

Dômes richiede molto all’ascoltatore, così come ha richiesto molto al compositore. L’elemento basilare di questa miscellanea di brani è il tempo, nel suo scorrere, nel continuo modificarsi dei suoni, lento, fatto di toglimenti, intersezioni, nascondimenti, spaesamenti, rituali che ci circondano e che, senza una mirata sublimazione, rimarrebbero altrimenti ordinari. Normandeau plasma lo straordinario con un materiale ormai alieno dalla materia grezza. L’onda audio viene cesellata, ridotta disforme, cenere che poggia su quel che si crede vivo e che è ben oltre “questa” vita.

Discreetly you see him sitting in a high folding chair. He doesn’t grumble at his players, he’s already set the scene as he wants it. With encouragement and a little push to the find just the right place. Robert Normandeau directs his acousmatic music very cinematically. And yet he does not make soundtracks.

Normandeau explores fleeting essences, fragmentation and extraction. He investigates timbre at the microscopic level, but also the sonorities of streetcars versus the reverberation of a church. Normandeau even uses rain splatter compositionally. Taking a contemporary classical approach he comes out with dark ambient soundscapes that bump up against Cinema perdu. His Hamlet-Machine without Actors, an adaptation of the soundtrack for the play by Heiner Müller, is certainly reduced to its extreme core. As a lament for the end of the (theatre) art, there remains only an afterglow, like an afterimage; a circle on the inside of your eyelids after looking too long at a light source.

Normandeau puts in just such actors and voices in the forefront the final stretch Baobabs. His interest is particularly in onomatopoeia. This focus allows him to tie language to the concrete world explicitly, a long way from abstract representation. Rhythmic chatter and laughter, dynamic nostalgia and serene texture are choreographed theatrically into a vocal dance that frolics and sparkles.

You shouldn’t listen to Dômes in one go. Choose your work and take the time, as if you’re watching a good movie. And immerse yourself for ten minutes inside one of Normandeau’s spaces. They are like five rooms projecting short films. Little movie theatres like a dioramas you can literally walk through, listening to see the decor and the scene constantly change color and atmosphere.

Kanadyjski kompozytor na swojej płycie Dômes zaprezentował pięć utworów z różnych lat. Dodam, że Normandeau nieprzerwanie tworzy muzykę od lat 80. Ten artysta także obraca się wokół elektroakustycznych czy akuzmatycznych eksperymentów, lecz wykorzystuje inne środki wyrazu np. w utworze Baobabs mamy cztery głosy, brzmienie sześciu zestawów perkusyjnych i taśmy. Wyraźnie słychać, że Normandeau inspirował się dokonaniami Harry’ego Partcha.

Wie aber klingt Heiner Müllers Die Hamletmaschine ohne Schauspieler? Ob ihm die Vorstellung gefallen oder ihn zumindest amüsiert hätte? Die zweite Frage ist spekulativ; die erste kann beantwortet werden. Auf Dômes (empreintes DIGITALes, 2014), einer CD des kanadischen Komponisten Robert Normandeau, findet sich ein achtminütiges Stück mit dem Titel Hamlet-Machine without Actors. Die bedrohlichen, mäandernden Sounds erarbeitete Normandeau für eine Montréaler Müller-Inszenierung seiner Landsfrau Brigitte Haentjens. Normandeau komponiert seit Mitte der Achtziger elektroakustische und akusmatische Musik. Dabei ist vieles für die Bühne entstanden. Er ist nicht der erste, der Die Hamletmaschine in Musik setzte: Zwischen 1983 und 1986 vertonte Wolfgang Rihm Müllers Stück als Musiktheater in 5 Teilen. 1990 nahmen Wolfgang Rindfleisch vom Rundfunk der DDR, Blixa Bargeld und FM Einheit von den Einstürzen- den Neubauten zusammen mit Gudrun Gut und Heiner Müller eine Hörspielproduktion auf, die als vergiftetes Geschenk kurz vor dem ersten Tag der Deutschen Einheit ausgestrahlt wurde. Normandeaus Kunstgriff, die Stimmen und Klänge der Schauspieler aus seinem Tonstück herauszunehmen, geht auf. Trotzdem oder gerade deshalb sieht man beim Hören dann doch Hamlet „an der Küste“, „mit der Brandung BLABLA“ redend, „im Rücken die Ruinen von Europa“. Seine Verweigerung, die Doppelrolle als Aufständischer und Unterdrücker; schlussendlich Ophelias all- umfassende, entthronende Absage.

Um das weite Feld der Elektroakustik wird gerne ein ebensolcher Bogen gemacht. Als viel zu akademisch, anspruchsvoll und anstrengend gilt auch diese Sparte der Neuen Musik — und viel zu selten wird sie für Außenstehende nachvollziehbar gemacht. Obwohl sich das in Québec ansässige Label empreintes DIGITALes zwangsläufig ans Fachpublikum richtet, rechtfertigen seine hochwertigen Veröffentlichungen die vermeintliche Mühe, sie einmal unvoreingenommen als Musik wahrzunehmen, die durchaus auch unterhalten kann und will. Einige herausragende Beispiele aus dem aktuellen Katalog mögen die „Anhörbarkeit“ von elektroakustischer Forschung und des sich davon ableitenden Ausdruck zu untermauern. Fortsetzung folgt.

Mit Dômes legt der in Montreal lebende und lehrende Komponist Robert Normandeau eine Auswahl von Arbeiten aus verschiedenen Schaffensphasen vor, die trotz ihrer voneinander abweichenden Kontexten ein homogenes Hörerlebnis offerieren. Zweckentfremdet editierte Theatermusik (Pluies noires von 2008 und Hamlet-Machine without Actors von 2014) trifft auf akustische Installationskunst (La part des anges, 2011 und Kuppel, 2005) und eine onomatopoetische Suite (Baobabs, 2012).

Jenem Anteil, der bei sich bei der Destillation von Alkoholika verflüchtigt und somit den Engeln überantwortet wird (La part des anges), widmet sich Robert Normandeau auf Basis altmusikalischer Vokal-Capella-Traditionen und erschafft so eine sinnliche Erfahrung aus intensiver Verflüchtigung und sakraler Kontemplation. Gleichfalls im Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie (ZKM) zu Karlsruhe entstanden und uraufgeführt wurde die sich auf der CD anschließende Klangverdichtung Kuppel, in der unter anderem das Fahrgeräusch der Karlsruher Straßenbahn sowie die Glocken der Stadtkirche am Marktplatz die Funktion tragender Ebenen übernehmen.

Doch nicht nur bei den Einwohnern der Fächerstadt dürfte sich hier ein Gefühl von Heimat und Vertrautheit einstellen. Ein Gefühl, das sogar als eine Einladung zur Auseinandersetzung mit den genannten — mehr oder weniger vagen — Begrifflichkeiten verstanden werden kann, so die Klangquellen der Alltäglichkeit im Hinblick auf ihre immanenten Meta-Ebenen transzendiert werden.

Bei Pluies noires handelt es sich um eine portugiesische Theaterinszenierung des Stückes Blasted (dt. Zerbombt) von Sarah Kane, dass die Kriegsnachwehen der menschlichen Seele auf explizite Art nachvollziehbar zu machen versucht. Die als Intermezzi eingesetzte Musik soll laut Regisseurin Brigitte Haentjens den Klang des Regens zu unterschiedlichen Jahreszeiten interpretieren, doch machen Robert Normandeaus finster anmutende Flächensounds nicht zuletzt deutlich, dass Verrohung auf Jahreszeiten keine Rücksicht nimmt.

Ähnlich schwer, aber keineswegs schwerfällig oder übergewichtig, erscheint Hamlet-Machine without Actors, was jedoch angesichts des Stoffes aus der Feder Heiner Müllerskaum überraschen dürfte. Zunächst auch für eine Haentjens-Inszenierung komponiert, liegt nun eine komplett überarbeitete Version vor, der es in neun Minuten gelingt, die Essenz des berühmten Monologs zu transponieren. In einem anderen musikalischen Bezugsrahmen würden beide Theaterkompositionen als herausragende Stücke des Dark Ambient verstanden werden.

Wie um der vorherigen Schwere entgegen zu wirken, beschließen Baobabs, in fünf Sätzen abwechslungsreich und pointiert kompilierte Lautmalereien eines Vokalensembles, das Album auf geradezu ansteckend heitere Weise. So entlässt Dômes seine Hörer mit einem stilistischen Ausreißer, der die enorme Bandbreite Normandeaus mehr als andeutet. Unter diesem Gesichtspunkt erweist sich diese Zusammenstellung als ein kluger Zug im Sinne einer breiteren Wahrnehmung dieses Komponisten, für den sich die Auseinandersetzung mit Elektroakustik hier als Mittel zum Zweck auszahlt.

La réputation de Robert Normandeau n’est plus à faire dans le monde de l’électroacoustique. Compositeur récompensé à d’innombrables reprises pour ses pièces, il aura fait entendre ses œuvres plus d’une centaine de fois partout à travers le monde, sans compter ses nombreuses collaborations pour la musique de scène.

Dômes est son plus récent recueil d’œuvres, distribué sous la fameuse étiquette montréalaise empreintes DIGITALes. Les pièces, composées pour dôme de haut-parleurs, un dispositif donnant une impression de tridimensionnalité du son, ont été réduites en stéréo tout en conservant leur caractère immersif. Ainsi, on se sent comme baigné dans un liquide sonore, flottant à la dérive vers un «ailleurs imaginaire».

En ouverture, on débute avec La part des anges, et on sait que c’est du sérieux. Un boom profond rythme l’évaporation des voix. La musique nous emporte vers les hautes strates de l’atmosphère, comme si nous n’étions plus qu’une vapeur ondulant vers un éden stellaire, et toute notion du temps s’envole, perdue parmi les souffles distillées. À regarder dans le noir, les yeux fermés.

Pluies noires, c’est de la corporalité et du viscéral. Les multiples couches de saxophone merveilleusement orchestrées sont en lente effervescence, sorte de machine organique qui se délecte de méchanceté. Qu’on ne surprenne que la pièce de théâtre Blasté de Sarah Kane aie servi de source d’inspiration. «Toutes ces pluies ne peuvent que difficilement laver la noirceur de l’âme humaine lorsqu’il est en guerre, spécialement à propos de celle de Bosnie à laquelle la pièce fait implicitement référence.» Une longue respiration de cruauté, celle d’une monstrueuse beauté.

Hamlet-Machine without Actors (à distinguer de la version «avec les acteurs» sur Puzzles du même compositeur) puise dans la trame sonore composée pour la pièce Hamletmachine, mise en scène par Brigitte Haentjens à Montréal en 2001. Véritable mécanique vivante, les bruits de métaux et de chaîne se mêlent aux sons plus introspectifs, des chants qui semblent observer le monde à travers les rouages d’une machine en marche.

Pas de doute, ces trois pièces sont des bijoux où se rencontrent beauté, intensité et une sensualité qui flirte avec la lascivité! […]

Kuppel, based on concrete sounds, is more exciting at first, but it overstays its welcome. Pluies noires and Hamlet-Machine without Actors are derived from stage music, Normandeau’s forte (and this Hamlet is excellent). Finally, the surprising Baobabs for 4 voices, 6 percussion (Sixtrum) and tape, a powerful, almost animal piece at times, with a dash of Harry Partch.

Dans La part des anges, des chants humains s’élèvent au-dessus d’un champ sonore de cultures mixtes et produisent une formidable immersion. Kuppel fut créée à partir de prises de son extérieures dans une vile d’Allemagne: carillon d’une place publique, grincement d’une porte ou roulis de tramways constituent une œuvre plus typique de l’électroacoustique «d’autrefois». Inspirée par le pièce Blasted de Sarah Kane, Pluies noires met en scène des vibrations émanant de souffles puissants, construisant ainsi un immense poumon d’où émanent moult fréquences hétéroclites. Hamlet-Machine without Actors est un maelstrom dont l’objet est d’évoquer «l’oppression de l’homme par la société». Baobabs est fondée sur l’utilisation exclusive de la voix humaine et intègre les percussions de l’ensemble Sixtrum. Cinq œuvres distinctes, cinq dômes sous lesquels le compositeur Robert Normandeau se surpasse.
