Liner notes
Above All…
The coming of the Montréal musiques actuelles/New Music America Festival in November of 1990 inspired us to underline this event with the production of a special disc, whose unifying concept would be a substantial artistic challenge to composers and that would compel electroacoustics to surpass itself. Therefore, we have commissioned twenty-five electroacoustic snapshots by composers from Québec, Canada, the United States of America and Mexico.
How then is this disc ‘new’
We also launched another challenge with this production, this time to Québec City photographer
The presentation of the photographs and texts, on twenty-five mobile sheets [in the original 1990 edition], is meant to incite you, the listener, to listen to and to re-listen to these pieces in the order of your choice. We have put the works into a certain order for the disc, however this is by no means the only possibility. By programming your compact disc player you can create you own sequence of clips.

In many of its aspects, electroacoustic music follows a logic similar to classical music. In terms of duration, composers of both realms tend to favor length over conciseness, developing ideas in cycles or architectural compositions.

The small French-Canadian label known as empreintes DIGITALes has quietly become one of the world’s best sources for some of the most forward-thinking experimental music of recent years.
This album contains 25 pieces commissioned by the label which all share the same time frame of 3 minutes in length. Composers from Québec, Canada, the United States, and Mexico participated. The music was commissioned to underline the 1990
The concept of the album is to merge popular song form (of a three-minute duration) with the concept of the video clip. This reactualizes electroacoustics by taking it out of the traditional concert hall and transporting it to the world of media, of clips, of miniatures, of the immediate… while still preserving the artistic integrity that electroacoustics demands today. The disc is in itself, a microcosm, presenting a synthesis of new electroacoustic creation as it is practiced in all its forms. Thus, presenting an opportunity to visit and revisit some of North America’s most dynamic composers.

Few releases are so integrated in medium and message. Most CDs continue the tradition of simply being a medium for the storage and transport of sonic artifacts, sound recording being the twentieth-century equivalent of the Guidonian hand. Like most labels specializing in electroacoustic music, empreintes DIGITALes continues to lace the daunting challenge of distribution, the costs, and its vagaries. To reach as wide an audience as possible, the recording is accompanied by a 58-page booklet that is trilingually French, English, and Spanish. It includes biographies of the composers, program notes, and a series of 25 photographs commissioned from the Quebec City photographer
Thirteen of the composers represented were born in the 1950s, and five of them in the 1960s. Eleven live in Montréal, four in Toronto, four in Vancouver. Four are from the United States, and one is from Mexico. The compositional and electroacoustic orientations are the polyglot that is rather characteristic of the Canadian Electroacoustic Community. This is part of this collection’s charm and strength, and a great part of its beauty.
As an educational tool, this CD could be a major resource. The 3-minute constraint provides a balancing framework for the study of compositional styles and schools and the works provide excellent examples for analysis.
Using the analytic hierarchy from linguistics — morpheme, vocabulary element, syntax, and semantic — these compositions can be parsed and described at each level. The following should clarify how I am applying these terms to music. By “sonic morpheme,” I mean the lowest level and smallest sonic unit

There are numerous, multilevel continua for sonic, æsthetic, and pedagogical exploration, including the problem of sonic identity, both internally within each work and across all 25 of the compositions. The obviousness of sound processing is one of the criticisms frequently hurled at electroacoustic music. Histoncally the indiscriminate slathering of sounds with reverberation has been one of this genre’s weaknesses. Several of the works on this CD have stimulated lively discussion as to whether the processing is integral or mearly decorative. This leads back to the question of sonic identity and the special case of quotation.
Quotation, in its broadest sense, is present in just about all of the pieces on this collection, from the sonic “objet réalité” tradition of musique concrète in

This CD certainly collates some of the most revolutionary and inventive electronic music composers in Canada today along with a few such explorers of other nationalities.
Of course, a collectfon of 25 pieces on any other medfum other than CD would be most troublesome, especially, as is often the nature with electroacoustic music, spaces within tracks may be part of the music, and wlthout much melodic structure one track can seem to flow into another, even when subsequent tracks may be very different. The track index on the CD player makes it plain who you are listening to all the time. Thus a-part from being an excellent compilatfon it ls also a good sampler/reference tool for checking out the various artists featured.
To review the individual tracks would be of course pointless — if you’re at all interested, let the music and informative collection of inserts do their own talking by introducing a world of music that certainly deserves wider recognition.

Thankfully, the nature of the project limits each composer to a three-minute “electro clip” within which to develop ideas. The framework rules out any penchant for self-absorbed doodling or unneccessary meandering.
